Double Bass Bass Shops in Hungary?

You may have hit gold!
.I hear great things about Hungarian Basses and this is one country; as is Romania, where you can get a truly great Bass for a reasonable price.

Akos Balazs, based in Budapest makes Gold, Silver and Bronze series instruments; all excellent and well reviewed.
Their presence (when available) in many of the most respected bass retailers speaks volumes.

Then there's Gellert, Budapest.
Welcome to Gellert Basses, Maker and Restorer Master - Gellert Basses

Then Barnabass Racz. I know a Professional Orchestral and chamber Bassist who uses a Racz as his main instrument.

If you're going to Hungary, I would also seriously look up Bucur in neighbouring Romania.
I was in contact with Bucur as a result of my research and he is very friendly and anwers enquires very quickly.

Hungary and Romania are gifted with some of the best tone wood available and a long tradition of musical instrument making at reasonable prices.

Cool! thanks for the replies! I didn't actually have plans to go to Hungary, but I have seen some really nice looking basses listed for sale there and then noticed that the exchange rate seemed to really favor the USD and wondered whether it was a a crazy idea to go there specifically to buy a bass, and whether you might still get a deal even after factoring in airfare shipping and whatever duties need paying. And you would see the world in the pprocess. I did run across the Gellert website and that place looks very good!

Why not go to Hungary? Even for Europeans, Hungary is cheap. So you'll be able to indulge yourself a low cost.
If you go to Budapest, I would also be sure to contact Balazs.
The silver rated double basses I've researched are very well reviewed and professional standard.
I'm sure the Gold series are divine! Not sure about price, but you can be sure they are a lot cheaper at source than some of the prices I've seen at retailers.
Be sure to tell these guys well in advance that you are coming and what you are looking for.
Short of commissioning a bass, you may find they'll have something similar for you to try.
As regards Bucur in Romania, he will advise you on hotels etc. I wouldn't be surprised if he put you up himself!
Bucur makes the Scala series basses for Thomann which are quite cheap, but well reviewed.
However he always has a good supply of Master Basses at this shop; where you can try them, and if you like them, he can make any necessary adjustments. Enjoy the journey!
