Bass string advice

So I almost feel like I'm asking a taboo question here but here it goes. I'm a new comer to the bass I have an 88 guild pilot 4 string I'm not exactly sure of the scale from what I've read its nut to 12 x 2 which puts me at 34 1/2 which I'm not sure if that's 34 or 35 cause I haven't seen any 1/2 mentioned when people are talking scale. I'm not exactly sure what direction I'm going in yet as far as sound I suppose my biggest influence is probly Justin chancellor from tool although the people I would most likely play with are working on some sort of psychedelic folk rock. So with that being said I've looked through the articles on bass strings and although very helpful what I really got out of them is try different strings till you find what you like. This is where I start to get like ahhh so many choices! So could somebody please recommend a set of strings from each of the categories that pretty much set the tone for those string type so I have some sort of jumping off point I want to go out and get a set of each so I'm trying not to break the bank but don't want to get anything that turns me off to a particular string type. Any help is greatly appreciated thank you for your time.

If you want to find the strings that will best fit, you really should measure from the Ball End to just past the nut.

Once you have this length you can find the strings that will best fit for you. But "most" long scale strings will work on that instrument, but some "long scale" strings are just barely long enough for some "long scale" instruments.
