They can, as long as you don't get OCD on the kinks which are still visible even though the strings been pulled with such high tension in tuning them to the pitch.
New strings specifically designed for through body use are a tad longer than normal, so you may need to snip off more of the taper, and may end up with actual string on the tuner post. Which is not a big deal, really.

What he said. There'll be a kink in the string. This may or may not be an issue, depending on what's where, and your tolerance for kinked strings.

There are strings which were designed specifically for thru-body stringing, such as from La Bella's.
IIRC, not just the length. In case of La Bella flats, someone here (probably Jason?) described the TB set to have different constructions on the strings near the ball ends, which aren't prone to break like the non-TB sets are when bent sharply on top of the saddles.
Yes, you can. I used La Bella 1954 string through on a top load bridge. I was able to intonate as usual, they tuned up, and they sounded awesome.
I have a bridge cover on this particular Jazz that covered the silk that laid past the saddles. Pretty surprised they worked as well as they did.

I use daddario EXL170 5 strings. I always play roundwound strings i dont cared more about change strings than i do now. My 6 strings had strings for 5 years snd now they are miscolored and i need to change them. But i try to change every 6mnd or if not i change them faster than 6 mnd. But i play bass only on tuesday only in 2,5 hours and i play concert ca 6/7 time total in a year. And with that i have total hours on 150 hours on the strings. But now i hear that daddario have come with daddario XT bass strings and i will try that since they say it have 42% longer lifetime. And now i play 5 strings and 4 strings. So then i will try that out but so small amount i play, i will not change strings until 6mnd,4month or 3 month. Thats just me
The only strings I know of that are specifically designed for thru-body that shouldn't be used for top-loading are the "thru-body" versions of the La Bella Deep Talkin' Flatwound. Otherwise, with most strings it's just a matter of having the right winding length (ball end to taper/silk) to ensure optimal fit.
