bass through Guitar head

I used my Mesa triple rec for years as a bass amp in my jamming room and it sounded awesome, but not to play on stage, as the thing did not have nearly enough power for bass purposes. I used a Mesa 400+ for years on stage, till I got sick of hauling a 65lb amp around in an already heavy rack, so from that point on, I just used regular power amps ( all the EQ/effects, come from my bass, and/or pedalboard ). Now a-days I use a couple power amps. For bigger shows I use both of them to run 4 cabs, since my preamp has dual outputs. I prefer 500-1000 watts mono per amp than 100-150 anyday.

Ahh yeah i guess 120 would be little for bass use, but say it was tube im thinking 120 would be fine.

its just like a stepping stone.

That thing is:
a) not a tube amp
b) not a bass amp
c) full of some goofy digital modeling nonsense
d) a Crate

That Peavey is a damn solid bass head, while I've never heard the Crate in question I would be prepared to bet any amount of money that it will sound worse and be less powerful.

Maybe if it was 129 TUBE watts...a lot of people say that 100 watts of TUBE power is more than enough to run bass.
i have been using a bassman 100 (the tube head, not the SS combo) with a 1x15 for rehearsals. plenty loud and sounds great. but for a show, there is no way. particularly outside ones.
i know i know, run through the PA. but *we* (and by we i mean me) have to hear it too, and monitor mixes are so notoriously bad (and bass light) at many of the places we play (even when we run our own sound :eyebrow: ) that it is hard to count on good stage volume.

add 1-4 as listed by projectMalamute above. you will also need to remember that the eq is very likely to be weird and/or centered on the wrong frequencies.
but these pointers assume a "normal" bass tone. if you want the kim gordon distort-o-bass, then you might be golden with that amp.

they are plenty loud for most situations (the peaveys), but i must admit having a hard time living with the mk III i had. i was using a 2x15 @ 2 ohms. i found it to sort of lack "liveliness". many times, i ended up using the crossover as a LPF (just need a little jumper), which delivered the "dub" sound with ease. my top end sounded like crap, so i just removed it :rollno: .

but at least it *was* a bass amp, and one that could buzz the legs of your trousers at the right settings. i do not believe any 100 watt SS guitar amp can deliver that.

Crates suck, in general. I wouldn't have a Crate bass amp, let alone a Crate guitar amp for bass. Guitar heads are not "voiced" for bass and although they certainly can be used and for some solo styles they may even be just what certain people like, I can't see why most bass players would want one. I had a Crate 120W bass head with a matching 115 cab and hated it. I was just impatient about getting a small rig and really regretted the purchase. In fact....I ended up giving it to my daughter and actually felt guilty about it because she deserved much better.
