Double Bass Bass versus Bass

8. Hardware - Everything is original except the tailpiece cord that i replaced.
9. Tone - This bass is a thumpin machine, huge low end but with nice articulation, enough sustain for my needs
10. Neck. Thin.
11. Set-up. Good, the fingerboard needs a dressing.
12. Price - paid $600 12 years ago, nice deal indeed
13. Comments - i can play things on this bass that i cant play on my carved one, maybe the neck, dimensions, who knows, this bass is the bass that sees more action, its a tank and doesnt suffer from humidity changes as my carved one... it also amplifies very well.

12. Price. - Runs $2300, I paid less because I work at the store where I bought it.
13. Comments. - I call it the top end of the bottom end. Its a Chinese intermediate bass but I have got a number of compliments on it. I performed with it in a friends recording class last September. Upon hearing back the unmixed tracks, I was shocked at how full the sound was (hopefully the player had something to do with that...)

That is a very cool link that I didn't know about, Dave.:hyper:
BUT.. Those are mostly reviews of mass produced shop basses. A great tool for a newbie looking for a first Bass, but if you noticed, a lot of the basses in this thread do not fall into the mass production genre.
This thread has been interesting so far.. let's keep it going!

1. Make: I guess you would call it a Gliga, came out of that shop but was finished here in Madison.
2. Model: It says big boy on the label
3. Year:2005
4. Hybrid.
5. Shape. Violin
6. Fittings. Ebony
7. Size. Probably about 7/8
8. Hardware. Good, it all works
9. Tone. Fair, Pretty meaty and full sounding, but it has a lot of wolftone and other resonance issues. Also can get a little thin in the upper registers.
10. Neck. Medium
11. Set-up. Good, I have a Marvin Wire Tailpiece on it
12. Price: 3000 when I bought it new
13. Comments.
Its taken me a long way, but now that I'm heading off to music school I think I'm gonna upgrade.

8. Hardware - Good. Stays in tune well. No problems with the endpin.
9. Tone - Great. Pizz - Dark, punchy, decent amount of growl. Amplifies quite well with a Realist. Great arco sound too.
10. Neck - Thick
11. Set-up - Good, done at Heinl's in Toronto about a year ago.
12. Price - Paid $3,000 CAD used. Lists $5,500 USD.
13. Comments - Beautiful dark spirit varnish, sloped shoulders for easy TP. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the tone, however I wish it was a little louder. Thick neck very comfortable for my huge hands. Spruce top, Maple back and ribs. Currently strung with a Spirocore Mittel E, Velvet Compas 180 A & D, Dominant G.

13. Its been praised by a few Baltimore Symphony bassists and my teacher at Peabody for being a great buy for the money. It easily competes with basses twice the price and is nice hunk of wood. I would recommend it for any college student looking for a nice upgrade and i know that the have been used to hold down nice orchestral jobs. It was "roughed out" in Kolstein's affiliate shop in Europe with Kolstein selected wood, then sent to N.Y. to be finished and set up. Which is how they keep the price down. Theres one for sale in the Classifieds if you want to check one out :) i couldnt recommend it enough if youre looking for something that competes with basses over half the price. And great idea for a thread Bass! Im sure it will help out many. i'm wishing someone would buy the Batchelder and submit a post about it :)

12. Price - my dad bought it before i was born for $400 off of a neighbor. it was in pretty rough shape. after a lot of restoration work, it has become a very special bass.
13. Comments - its a big bass with 43" scale length. I would love to know more about it. sadly the original label is no longer readable although several fake labels can be seen. it is a workhorse-- besides getting the seams glued bi yearly, it has never had any serious maintenance issues. before i had a car, i used to haul it through all sorts of chicago weather without any problems. every time i pick it up i can't believe how lucky i am to have this bass. its currently strung with velvet animas for A and E, a eudoxa D and an oliv G.

Yeah! I like the ones like Chris' and Carl's especially....where the owner got the bass at a steal or even free and played, used the instrument relentlessly. If taken care of and loved, they never fail to amaze us. After we're gone, hopefully, they'll continue to brighten the musical lives of many others. :D
