Double Bass Bass versus Bass

1. Make. Dual Joy (Chinese)
2. Model. unknown
3. Year. unknown
4. Carved
5. Shape. Gamba
6. Fittings. Ebony
7. Size. small 3/4
8. Hardware. Fair
9. Tone. Good, but small sound. Since I always use an amplifier, this is hardly an issue.
10. Neck. Thin, crazy thin. Coming from electric bass this felt very comfortable.
11. Setup. Good. Lisa Gass at L.A. Bass Works fixed me up with a much better quality bridge and adjusted the nut.
12. Price. $2500 almost two years ago.
13. Comments. my 2nd upright (the 1st upright I owned about 25 yrs ago was originally a plywood something or other that was put out to pasture from a local school system's music dept. I sold it after becoming frustrated with the high action and lousy sound. didn't know what a good setup was.)

I regularly get good comments on the tone (Fishman Full Circle and Corelli 370 Mediums). The shoulders are quite sloped and is real easy to get around on. Has an Eb neck. Kind of plain Jane looking, but the sound is decent and it's easy to play.

7. Size. 3/4
8. Hardware. Good
9. Tone. Good
10. Neck. Medium-Thick
11. Set up. Good
12. Price. $5000
13. Comments. Gorgeous instrument with highly figured back and neck. Neck feels meaty, good thick ebony fingerboard. Lisa Gass at L.A. Bass Works installed a new bridge so that I can use a Full Circle pickup (the original Despiau bridge had delrin adjusters with a bigger thread size than the Full Circle) and did the set up, she's a wizard!

10. Neck. ?
11. Set-up. Good but I had some things tweaked to suit me

13. Comments. The bass has an Amati shape with very wide ribs. When I have listened to other people play it, it has a warm sound and can be loud, but it is not a boomer. It tends to a wee bit dark so I like to use strings that brighten it up a little, but this is a very small effect and barely noticeable to non-critical listeners.
