Bass War !!!!

The fretless gets my vote. Are you Pino Palladino? cause you played that bass like a champ!

Unfortunately I'm not Pino...

Thanks !!!!

By the way, Pertyman- how is that 'Ray modded?

I added 2 switches that control the coils. Each switch controls a different coil.
1. When both coils are up - the normal parallel Music Man sound.
2. When only the neck coil is up, only neck coil is on.
3. When only the bridge coil is up, only neck bridge is on.
4. When both coils are down - the pickup is in series mode.

Or just watch this video:

Fantastic video in terms of editing, playing and content.

This shows the differences and also the similarities of the basses. I was impressed with the growl and consistency of the P; some of the most distinct tones came from the J; the Warwick Starman, which had impressed me on other videos possibly didn't work as well here, even though I like the tones from that bass. The Jazzman is a very modern sounding bass with that nasal bass sound. I like the tones you can get from the Jazzman but I'm not sure that modern sound worked as well as the others on this song. I thought the fretless Stingray in it's first EQ setting was wonderful, I liked this ray tone the best, slightly Jacoesque playing near the bridge. Finally, the fretted Stingray was very ballsy and maybe just a touch too much for my taste.

So for the song IMHO I liked the J, P and the fretless Ray the best. But as basses they all sounded really good. And even though the J and P sound quite different they both work in this context, which is a revelation really.

Thanks for all the effort it takes to do this.

Peace

For that song specifically? Well, according to these things hangin' off each side of my head (with the left ear being slightly cauliflowered, due to years of wrestling & bjj). I rank 'em in this order.

(1 & 2) It's a tie, folks. Maybe. With the '77 Jazz, maybekindasortof ever so slightly edging out the '95 Ray. In other words, it's a flip of the coin for me.

(3) The '04 'wick Jazzman

(4) The '08 Star Bass II (Yup. It surprised me, too.)

(5) '92 Ray Fretless

(99) Yeah. T hat's how dull she sounded on a track of this type. But, not all is lost. Because there's many a track where this'd be the first choice for me. But, to my ears? Not today.

Great vid!

Thought the Warwick Streamer sounded the best - very nice.

2nd place goes to the stingrays (edge going to the red one). Never really heard these before but sound great!

3rd: Surprised how well the P bass sounded at first on "full". Much more full than I expected but did not like as much later in the video.

As a newbie this vid is very helpful so thanks!
