Bass Weight

Does anyone know of a web site, or report that lists the Bass by their weight?


I've got a back problem, that a degenerative condition, so I need to lighten up.

So that means my SX 5er has got to go, love it but it's HEAVY.

I love playing a 5 string but really need to find a good sounding lighter weight one. The 4 I have is a Ibanez GSR200, and it's OK, but I really like my 5.... so any ideas?

Best bet is find a couple of basses that you like and are in your price range and ask here again the specific weight. There is no such report listing the weights of instruments, and most manufacturers do not list their weights.

I have found that a lot of budget or mid-range 5-string are heavy, and you won't find a light-weight unless you start going to luthiers and boutiques, which consiously use bodies that are either smaller, chambered, or built using specifically light ash or alder, (or poplar, basswood, etc).

In budget basses, I think most Ibanez 5-strings are very light - an SR505 for example. Korean MTDs are also very light, specially the Kingston series.

I had an Ibanez GSR2005 that was cheap, played great and was very light.

My SX is Alder, and the web site says 9 lbs, but it weights in at 13 on my scale.

I played a Schecter 5 at GC and really liked it, so I'm looking into it, but I was curious if there was a way to find some decent alternatives. Get some that list low weights then research them. etc... :)

Fender's New Neoprene Straps are excellent for people who suffer with shoulder and back problems, I myself suffered badly with my left shoulder, partly because of growing up with an Sx Bass. Had to have some physio done on it but partof the problem lay with my strap.
They're about 3.5 inches thick at the shoulder and its elasticated so you don't even feel the weight of the bass!

Check them out!!

There is no site that I know of that lists basses and their weight. But the individual manufacturers sites usually list the weights of the bass. Keep in mind though that even if the manufacturer says a bass weighs 9 lbs., it could actually weigh more or less. Wood varies, even within the same species so the weight of each bass can be different.

Hollowbodies are probably the lightest basses you can get.

Most basses vary weight wise from bass to bass.

The best thing to do is find the type of bass you like and contact different store and ask them what the lightest bass they have that you like. I did this exact thing recently, wanted another Lakland Skyline JO4 but wanted one lighter than the one I already have.......contacted Bass Central and now I'm the proud owner of a new 8.25 lb. JO4. :)
