Bass with the "Wal sound" without the price?

I have heard many of the Music Man basses with the double humbucker can get close without the price. My Sterling 34 can get a growly new Tool tone without much hassle. You aren't going to get anything close though without a decent amp. I would imagine a good Trace Elliot, Ashdown, Ampeg SVT II with a Music Man, Bongo, Sterling double humbucker will get you close enough for a happy medium.

There is a reason a Wal sounds like a Wal, the electronics. Only a Wal has them.
