Greetings and salutations! Me and the KRB had a fun time on the beach at the Seal Beach summer concert series. We played the first concert of the series last night to a fun crowd with perfect weather. Skip and Art were chatting while Art unloads when I pulled up. We were glad that the city had blocked off some parking spaces for us on the street. Parking is a nightmare down by the beach. I rolled my gear up to the small-ish stage (12x16) and found a nice QSC sound system. Art and Mario get their gear in order. Skip was already set up, trumpet and everything. I should've brought my small rig. But I think my GK stuff looks pretty good in front of the pier. After I set up I took a little stroll because we weren't quite ready to sound check. This is the second longest wooden pier in the state of California. There is a seal at the pier entrance next to the veteran memorial. This is Ted, our sound guy. He's a great gut to work with and does an excellent job. His company is DJE Sound and Lighting. You know what Mario is doing, right? He's giving Ted some kick drum. Daniel and Art sound check. Skip checks his messages while waiting his turn to sound check. Skip won the longest commute today, driving two hours for this gig. After sound check, some of the lads go around the corner for a slice. Art used to work in this neighborhood and knew all the "in" places. Skip and I enjoy our slices at a table while Art and Mario head back to the beach. It was pretty dang good pizza. I got the "deluxe". After supper we headed back to the stage to put on the show. It was a perfect evening to make some noise. Skip readies his iPad. Mario got a nice sub-woofer and an 8" QSC monitor. Kelly readies her setlist and lyrics. We've got time for a quick amp-selfie before we start the show. Skip is ready to put on the show. We've got to get him a Scully shirt. Mario wore his shirt to match his new drum kit. Daniel and Art are waiting for the announcer to finish. I'll be back to finish in the next post. Thanks for looking! Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Hi! Here's a shot of the crowd just before we start. It was a relatively small park and it was packed. Kelly puts on the show. We get a 15 minute break so I wander over to the other side of the pier where Ted has set up a couple more speakers for the Kid Zone, face painting, snack, drinks, etc. The crowd was dancing all day long. I think they kind of liked us a little bit. There were a couple of special guests in the crowd today. Do you see them? We played one of our Journey songs as an encore. The audience had a blast. Our first special guest was Mr. @OCDave. He was kind enough to drop by after work after hearing we would be here. It was great meeting you and nice chatting with you Dave! I hope to see one of your gigs soon. The other special guest was Stephanie. You might remember Stephanie from the "I Back A Hot Singerbabe" thread and from our "Nashville" show at Disney a couple years ago. Stephanie is a real sweetheart and uber-talented. She just got back from Seattle where she starred in a musical comedy run of Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. I foresee great things for her. Alas, the fun is over and it's time to get back to work being a roadie again. After loading up the trusty old Astro van I took one more parting shot of the Seal Beach Pier. I found a few cell phone videos on the Freindface and cluged them together to give you and idea of how much fun we had. A good time was had by all. Tonight we'll be performing at the Valley View Casino. I like that place. I just wish it was closer. But I'm not complaining! Thanks for looking. And thanks to all of you for sharing your gigs too! Good stuff. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Special Guests... The guy in the middle of the crowd with his arm around the girl wearing the blue sweater looks just like Robert Redford...
Hi Chris, Yeah, I noticed that guy there and did a double-take. I'm pretty sure it wasn't. Hey, I found this Edvard Munch type picture of the band. Pretty weird. No, Mr. Munch wasn't there either. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
@BassCliff - It was truly a pleasure to meet you and welcome you to the north coast of Orange County. The KRB sounded great...and you were awesome channeling your inner True Willie singing lead vocal in On The Road Again. I look forward to catching you at one of your upcoming shows. BTW - As you mentioned, 12' x 16' seemed like a very tiny stage for the six of you...not a lot of room to move around for anyone.
One of the cool things living here in So Cal is meeting fellow TB'ers. I must say, we're an awesome group of people Very true Dave, KRB really is a top notch outfit. And yeah, that was a tiny stage. Cliff couldn't do his usual dancin' stage moves
Very cool! Looks like you all had a fun gig, evidently had some eats to go with..(!) and, what else is there to say?? OUTRAGEOUSLY...EXCELLENT!!! Pretty darn nice backdrop there, I might add...
Another great gig report, Cliff. Thanks for taking the time to share such a wealth of information! BTW...What lake is that behind you? Cheers, Chuck
Hi guys, Thanks for the picture Dave! Thanks for the kind words. I hope we can meet up again soon. You are too nice. But that's OK. I can take it. Thanks Dan. It was a fun little gig. Oh my! Too dang funny! The guys in the office are looking at me weird. I shouldn't laugh like that for seemingly no reason. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Looks like a nice gig. I haven't been to Seal Beach since the early 90's but it doesn't look like it has changed as much as some other places on the coast. Makes me wish I had been there.
From the Net, the ugly truth about Seal Beach "There may be an occasional stray seal but not often. The town was named Seal Beach because the developer/railroad magnate decide adding "Seal" to the name would bring more investors/buyers than "Bay City"." Guess we'll have to be satisfied with the seal statue
Hi, Ha! I never noticed. Skip plays trumpet on a couple of our songs too. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Grant, You'll never find a Mac at my work desk. Maybe on my repair bench. I'll test them. I'll fix them. I'll configure them. I'll roll them out for the end user. But I'm a PC guy all the way. But, yeah, that's me laughing. Totally. Thank you for your indulgence, BassCliff
Great report as usual! 2 questions: 1) Was that the @BassCliff singing Black Water? If so, nice job! 2) Was Art playing a G&L ASAT? That sure silver metallic finish sure looked like G&L. Again, great job, great report, keep'em coming please! Pete
Good! Somebody needs to help out my HPQ stock since I don't... all Mac and Android here. One question I've been meaning to ask is about your MB500. Do you prefer it over the fusion for tone, or did not want tubes and potential reliability when hauling frequently, or?
