Well, here's the latest update, sorry about the crappy picture. We got some snow just after Halloween, so I got to try out my new winter bike, and it was set up as a single-speed. The first thing I noticed was that if I wanted to stand up while pedaling, I'd lose all of my traction. So I need a low gear for climbing a couple of hills on my route. So I resurrected an old Sturmey-Archer S3C hub, 3 speeds with coaster brake, from my bin, and Santa brought me a new rim and spokes!
I'm unhappy with the handlebar -- it's too low. So I'll keep my eye out for something nicer, but in the meantime this bike is working out great. Unfortunately we're having an incredibly mild winter, so I might not be able to see how this bike really handles deep snow.

It has been a while since I have been on TB or posted in this thread. I built this bike up over the summer and wanted to show it off. Got a great deal on the frame off Facebook. It was in very good shape but was painted rattle can matte black over the original red paint. I took it to a local bike restoration shop that does in-house powder coating to have it refinished. Love how it turned out! The bike is a lot of fun to ride and can go just about anywhere. I have been mainly using it for gravel and dirt trails.
I don't know if this is par for the course in other parts of the country/world but this is Armageddon for SoCal!
A friend of mine who rides cyclo told me this is why she prefers eggbeaters.
Looks like a fun ride! Usually takes just as much time to get cleaned up as it is do the ride!

When I raced cross, I bought the early generation of Eggbeaters and they worked great, until the first muddy race I did. The seals didn't keeps out the crud so, by the end of the race, I could barely turn the cranks since the crud totally destroyed the bearings. Went back to SPD's and didn't have the problem again.

It's often wet here, but we don't get the mud since we don't really have any dirt. We just get slick rocks and roots.

So that is why some folks call them dirt bikes.
We've had a ludicrous amount of snow this year (one storm resulted in an 8 day state of emergency) but the groomer fairies have been hard at work on the trails and we've had some pretty epic conditions lately. Though corridor height is an issue. Branches and stuff that are more than 10 feet off the ground normally are now at eye level when on the bike.

The white point of land jutting out into the ocean in the first pic is Cape Spear, which is literally the farthest East you can get in North America. Closest land east of here is Ireland (though we are at the same latitude as Paris).

Last year my neighbor bought the bike I've wanted ever since I saw one in a magazine as a teenager - a late 80s Kestrel 4000. It's in near perfect condition and almost all original. He paid $200 for it from somebody with no idea what they had. Actually, he didn't know what it was either, but he thought it looked (and felt) expensive, so he took a chance.
Unfortunately the only pictures I've gotten we're in partial shade. Not surprisingly, it doesn't go outside very often unless he's riding it.
I've only ridden it once, and it was everything I imagined. The handlebars are too narrow, and you feel every bump in the road, but pedaling is effortless and the bike feels like it weighs nothing. It was like being a kid again.

I think this may be the only safe place I can share this where folks will understand or...
A couple of friends, gym rats. hard core cyclists, way into backcountry skiing, rock climbing. Complete jock and jockette pairing of a couple had a melt down.. Something over the "what's for dinner kind of question..." small potato's but that's what camel's backs are for... so he stormed out all PO'd ... and his first act was to unfriend her on Strava... moderne reaction to an age old problem.. ;-)
They just got back from a 2 week Jackson Hole and Montana ski trip and no blood was spilled so I guess all is good... I just found his reaction priceless... You can't make this stuff up!
