ric with a pick. i always think of roundabout by yes when i hear someone mention nasty/dirty tone.

also, any single humbucker bass. nothing except a rick has a more nasty sound than a humbucker.

Damn something must be wrong with my Ric...I mean I wouldn't call it the rawest, filthies, nasty tone in the world. Mine is fairly clean and warm sounding. My playing style must suck beans with this bass or something. Or maybe I need to stop dipping the high mids. Sometimes I wonder why exactly I play a Ric.

I know you asked what bass, but for a nasty tone, just use a rude fuzz pedal. The Link Removed is nasty by design. It does a good job of emulating a guitar run through an amp cranked to 11 with speakers that have been pushed too hard way too many times

I recorded a particularily nasty track last night with a 1983 Peavey Foundation (with the uber-nasty Super Ferrite pickups) going through a Sansamp Bass Driver DI with the drive control up at about 2 o'clock, played with a pick.... pure filthyness

Any P-bass with DiMarzio Model P pickup. I'm also getting some nastiness from my DiPinto Belvedere semi-hollow, which has two large single coils. Flip to the neck pickup, and it has P-bass phatness, but with single coil growl, especially played aggressively with a pick. Add a touch of overdrive, and you're there.

I'd say you can get pretty damn nasty with a Rick or Thunderbird, either way according to your taste... the Rick would generally be brighter.

An Entwistle-style Fenderbird would get pretty nasty too with the T-bird pups and all-maple bolt-on neck. Whee!

Possibly the high mids thing. I think that's where the snarl lies.

If you do want a Precision, the maple fretboard goes a long way towards a more aggressive, gritty tone.

P-Bass. No specific year, with a stock passive pickup will get very nasty. You may have to try a few out to find one that has an obnoxious, honkin' tone, but they're readily available.

Here somethin i call raw sound... my Yammy motion MB II custom... pretty rare model... active electronics... boost trebleto top... break the knob... not to go down anymore and use DR HI- Beam a slap that baby as hard as u can !!!!

You gonna have the nastiest sound ever found with a bass right trough an amp...

What you need is the cheapest, most beat-up p-bass copy you can find, then beat it up some more. Run it through 15 distortion and chorus/phaser pedals mounted on a big chunk of plywood and play through a Fender Bassman 60 watt amp with all the controls turned to 10. You will get nasty, filthy tone. And it's pretty cool stuff. My friend uses a similar setup to this, except he recently sold out and got a Harke half stack and a Gibson tbird.
