I totally agree. But if you play it with heart, that's really all that matters.
You know, I think I've figured out the big difference between guitarists and bassists. Guitarists want to hide what they're using so other people don't copy it. Bass players not only don't hide what they're using, they get offended if others don't want to use it.
I've always thought that if people need to hide what they're doing are often a tad insecure. Most of the people I've worked with who exhibit these behaviors are either paranoid, or have too many problems....sometimes both. There's the old adage that a magician never reveals his tricks, but there are enough pro musicians who teach everything about them, but they're still employed.
