Basses that are indeed, one trick ponies

For a one trick pony I'd nominate the Gibson EB3. I gigged one a few times and although it's got lots of knobs and settings, it's only got one usable tone (that I liked anyway). But hey, Andy Fraser made it his own too!

Tonally? I'd second the Hofner comment, add Dan Electro maybe and throw in Rickenbacker at the risk of a flame.

Just wondering (not flaming) have you ever actually played a Ricky? I don't just mean in a shop or borrowing a mates for 5 minutes, but really played and discovered the huge array of tone it gives?

Fantastic basses, (mines a 4001 with new electronics, i.e. cap bypass).

Even my P-bass which has no where near the variety available is still quite versitle.

I just got back from fooling around with one at GC, and I would definitely not call it a "one-trick pony". In fact, I'd like to pick one up one of these days. Even through the usual GC din, I could get plenty of tonal variety.

I totally agree. But if you play it with heart, that's really all that matters.

You know, I think I've figured out the big difference between guitarists and bassists. Guitarists want to hide what they're using so other people don't copy it. Bass players not only don't hide what they're using, they get offended if others don't want to use it.
