A few instruments come to mind when I think of "thick bass tone"....Fender Precision, G&L L2000, Spector NS2, Wal, T-Bird, Roscoe, there are many more but I can't think of them right now!

Basses that are naturally thicker in tone?

More than likely it's the heavy bridge. The mass of the bridge and the headstock have a lot to do with tone. Probably more than the wood itself. The maple helps as well.
THICK = G&L L-1000 with p/u toggle pointing bridgeward. Try it and you'll discover why they call it the OMG setting.
I'm just talking about when he hits the low Eb. Its dark, thick and deep. I'll get a vid of my bass later tonight, showing it and demo it unplugged.
