Basses that just sound BAD...

I pity them. Such narcissism bleeds into other departments, and ruins lives, including those of the haughty bassists.
With all the typos in the grand-flame post, I wasn't clear whether the illustrious critic was penning a learning critique of James Jamerson's, er, non-influential playing that he did on the side as he changed the role of electric bass forever, or Carol Kaye's ludicrously melodic and thus obscure playing that simply MADE songs such as the seminal "Good Vibrations." Tough one, that.
Fortunately for me, everything I own sounds amazing. Yes, everything else is crap.

I went with the "surely this guy is making a joke" angle on this one. Definitely a judgement call.
For me its got to be a Lakland DJ5.
To my ears its too deep and dark sounding.
Not a bad tone as such, just one (and the only one) bass ive never got on with.

I've heard and played a few good basses from this company but overall almost every
one I've played (lots), owned (5) (I was young, impressionable, and stupid for buying
them) , and heard have sounded like crap. Warwick has the most overly compressed,
dead tone to me. They are way overpriced for what they are worth. They have horrible
clanky attack due to their brass frets and over use of exotic woods. Their electronics
are worthless and they sound like they are made from soggy drift wood. No go on the
Wicks for me. Never again! That's my opinion on the worst tone I've heard.
I don't like Ibanez much either. Then again Warwick is basically a "high end" Ibanez. ;?

Your interpretation works. The alt/s are substantially catastrophic in their implications. No-brainer. So why was I thinking?
I dunno what's more amusing.The memories of you praising Warwicks,the tantrum you threw when you thought there was a chance you wouldnt win a Warwick or the fact you actually bought 5 of these so called,crap basses.How on earth do you decide what you're going to buy next?

My old dean Metalman. Horrible. WAY too hot, treble at all; with the treble boosted full, it was like a P with tone rolled down.

About 10 years ago I had an American Fender 5-string Jazz and no matter how new the strings were and what their gauge, the B string would be DOA by the time I tuned the bass - the other strings sounded as they should, new. But the overall tone of the bass was unremarkable, I sold it without regret. I had a Japanese P-bass that sounded like a bass ought to and I bought that for a third of the price of the 5-string.

that fender must have had dead strings when you tried it?
Fender should improvise / make it better preamp.
there is just to much hiss in their active circuit preamp.
to each is own, i love the sound of warwicks and think they have some of the best tone around. to me i havnt played a over all horrible sounding bass before although an epiphone thunderbird to me was god awful.
