See...subjective. My 1978 Ray don't growl...it snaps and bites. The only EBMM I owned was the 20th Anni Ray. No growls there.
When StingRays first came out, it and Alembics were the epitome of Hi Fi. Again, my opinion.

Here's a great youtube clip of three hifi bassists on stage together. Stanley with his Alembic, Marcus with his Fender and Victor with his Fodera. All side by side. Of course their playing styles are very different but it gives you a feel for how hifi each bass can sound and how much sonic flexibility the bass can have even with only 4 strings!
