It's a fantastic design, really. It's just that P/J combination that makes me mad.
I never liked it and esp. on that bass it drives me nuts. And if it has to be this way, why do they write "Jazz Bass" on the neck? Wasn't there a japanese model with a j/j combination?

They call it a "Jazz" because it has the classically-offset Jazz body, as well as the 1.5" nut-width neck. Generally, the parent companies use the shape of the body to determine what's a "Precision" and what's a "Jazz". (Yes, I know the Japanese-made progenitors to the Duff-sig were called "Jazz Bass Specials" despite the P-body) Besides, a fully-shaped body, let's say a Precision, with no pickup routes cut into it is and always will be a Precision.
I, myself, use the same measuring stick, much like I would for a car. (e.g.: putting a Porsche engine under the hood of a Volkswagen doesn't make it a Porsche)
As far as J/J configured Aerodynes go, the two most-prominently made versions were a medium scale (AJB-M) and a five-stringer (AJB-V), both of which also had pickguards and control plates.

It's been done in 2009, & by the looks of it, sales were non-existant to minimal i'd say cause i've read no reviews nor seen any videos on it. Disappointing though perhaps cause gibson did good with the Grabber G1 re-issue. Although it would've been better with multiple choice options even in limited edition. I guess the Ripper is one of those basses that'll catch on much later than when designed.
Gibson SS Thunderbird in something other than the atrocious black finish they came with. Love the bass, hate the finish. I'd love to have one in Gibson white with chrome hardware.

I mean a PROPER reissue: exactly like the original and without changing the body shape. (Which they did with the Ripper II.) Plus, no $3000 price tag. $1500 should be plenty.

75-82 body shape, 73-76 pickups. I prefer the look of the massive screws on the pickups rather than at the sides. Paint it in Bullion Gold (like the 50th anniversary Thunderbird) with an ebony fretboard, and you have the best bass in existence. Oh, and make in alder. Agreed, but then again, once i have the time, & the parts, i'm building my own version of the ripper. All maple body & neck, 75-82 shape, rosewood fretboard (stained in ebony), blood red colour & original wiring with GFS lipstick humbucker pickups in black. Something different & inexpensive compared to ripper pickups on Ebay & Duncan replacements.
