I have been reading this forum for a while as a silent visitor, but as I feel more and more addicted to it and intend contribute actively, it's now time to introduce myself.
I am located in France. In my teens (late 70's of previous century) I used to play classical guitar and received formal music education.
At age 25 I started learning classical double bass with a professional orchestra bass player for a couple years, but for some reasons my motivation declined (in retrospect I understand I had a poorly setup bass, which was too strenuous to play for a beginner) and I started doing other things musically (singing bass in choir) so that my poorly setup plywood bass stayed in a corner for about 20 years.
A few years ago, I joined a small vocal band who also play all kinds of instruments, and the need to play again bass became irresistible. I was lucky to purchase a beautiful and nice sounding fully carved Italian double bass. I also have, and love to play an acoustic bass guitar, an electric bass, and a u-bass. They are all fretless. Frets feel very cumbersome to me!
