I'd have to say Billy Sheehan and Chris Wolstenholme for using distortion, Sheehan has a broader use of distortion-sometimes it's mild, other times it's full on screaming

Thanks guys! The key is either an AMT Fatal Tube, or (newly) a ZVEX Woolly Mammoth... but mainly it comes from a tube amp (Ampeg SVT or newly, a GK Fusion 550) with the input cranked to 3 or 4 o'clock, and the Master turned way back (depending on the size of the venue)... and of course, not being afraid to punish those strings!

I believe he uses a turbo rat into a 400RB or 70's SVT, then to an SVT 8x10. His current bass is a Roland synth controller like Phil Lynott used, except without mirror pickguard!
Check out his other band Jesus f____ing Christ. He plays more like the old hardcore Neurosis.

I'm a big enthusiast of distortion, not sure why, and I was just wondering who you guys think uses it best. My vote goes to Geezer Butler.

Well, I'm a big enthusiast of good music - and of distortion only inasmuch as it serves to actually improve a given piece of music. Definitely not for its own sake...

That said, my vote goes to Billy Sheehan - because he knows how to use distortion tastefully and musically. Even when the distortion is heavy and way over the top, it still works musically. IME, there are not enough players who can claim that...
