+1 too that. I picked up the new record today and flicked through the tunes and stopped on Glass Arrows amazing tone.

My other faves are Jeph Howard and Manuel Carrero (and Beck too)

I'm thinking Chris Wolstenhomme from Muse. Nice crunch with good note spearation. Probably helps that he has like six dirt pedals and a guy backstage operating his board.

I have always thought Squire's sound on Close to the Edge was the best bass tone I'd ever heard recorded. it was loud as balls too, and somehow it fit into the mix without destroying it. I've never heard another recording of bass that quite touches it.

What's funny is that according to Bill Bruford, the entire song was recorded in chunks, with the band heading off to gigs with their same equipment inbetween. He said something about how inconsistent the sound was, but I think Offord did some sort of miracle of engineering to make it all sound like a single take.

Surprised nobody has mentioned him yet, but for me it is easily Adam Duce of Machine Head.

Saw them on the 28th of march this year. When the tech was doing the bass sound check, my jaw hit the floor, the hair was standing on the back of my neck and I nearly had to run to the toilet to clean the mess I was about to have in my pants. I immediately turned to the missus and said 'now THAT is the tone that I want!!' It was dirty, punchy and really evil-sounding. If anyone has seen the DVD in the special edition of machine heads album 'the blackening', they may know what I am on about.
I love Cliff Burton, I love Lemmy and I love Rob Trujillo's tone, but Duce has got this one for me.
