Bassists "nerdier"?

Just a thought that struck me a while ago- do you think bassists (on average), tend to be nerdier that guitarists?

By nerd, I sort of mean taking an almost obsessive interest in their hobby.. you can play Warhammer and not be a nerd, but if you know all there is to know about the races, and have a custom carrying case that cost an obscene amount of money, its nerdy!

Iv just found bassists tend to know a lot more about the history of the instrument, the various techniques and things..
and not just on the bass, i ave found bassists tend to be just nerdier in general

what do you think?

In the old days it was Surf, Sex, Suds and Sun - with some surf music thrown in when it was flat on the Pacific and we were too tired to do the Wedge.

So - we played in a band. Night surfing was too dangerous anyway!

Maybe it was the change to techno-bass lines and fingering that changed it all. After all - if you could actually play the new demanding lines, then you got a serious case of head-pump I think.

Maybe 'nerd' is quite right as a descriptive.

I suspect that the latter versions of 'Soul & Motown' music had a lot to do with the changes though in both playing and attitude.

It was obviously more complicated bass lines than a single note, repeated loud and hard for 03:00 minutes until the song was over.

Really? We wear our guitars around our necks with our pants on backwards so we don't scratch anything on accident. Or spend the next ten mortgage payments on something because it's eaten poop so hard it has "mojo".

And Rush? That's all I have to say. I'm almost gonna add some Primus in there too, but I'll be good.

If you consider I'm right in the middle of reconfiguring my home network to improve file sharing for all the seven computers running in my house, most of which have dual or triple partitioned hard drives that also run various flavors of Linux ..... Then, yes, I am a bass playing nerd!!!!

Speak for yourself maybe...not sure...I'll speak for myself. I've only played in indy, garage, post punk/prog and art rock bands. In these contexts I tend to be the least nerdy. Most of the others guys I play with are record collector geeks who are totally into that, H.P. Lovecraft, indy film etc. Although I'm into a lot of the same stuff I'm not obsessive like they are;I always tend to be the "average joe" sort of.

If anything I thought bass players tended to be the toughest guy in the band(drummers for the sheer physicality of their instrument often are too.) In a lot of the punk bands, for instance, whose interpersonal dynamics I'm famliar with, the bass player was often the "enforcer" ie the guy most likely to start something in the name of aggrieving wrongs against his "mates'/affronts to the band ...Peter Hook from Joy Division is a prime example. I wear this mantle in the bands I'm in.

Of course, I was in the military for 6 years so that could have something to do with it

I think we generally have to be the smartest, or "nerdiest", since we hold the backbone of the band, are so hard to find, and are generally the most in demand, what with drum machines being easily available.

Well, I can describe in great detail the attributes of the DeHaviland Mosquito, explain just why the Falcon would totally pwn the Enterprise, detail the course of the Battle of Waterloo, name the entire Shrewsbury Town squad for the '03-'04 season and concisely sum up the evidence provided by Charles Darwin for natural selection.

On the other hand, my guitarist thought Spielberg directed Titanic...

Iv always found its guitarists who think the band revolves around them.. I suppose thats not neccesarily being pretentious though...

I'm certainly one of the more nerdy in bands I play with, but I have seen some real airhead bassists that make guitards look good.

Quad blaster turrets mean that wherever the Enterprise is, its getting hit by something. Don't forget, the Falcon alos has proton torpedoes.

Anyway, if the Enterprise got the upper hand, the Falcon would get outta there in a flash; it once made the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, y'know...
