bassists who aren't

I was reading through the bassists you can't stand watching thread and started wondering. Does anyone know of any bassists from bands that actually didn't play bass? Sort of similar to lip synching or having someone behind stage? Also curious about who actually played for the band.

The second question here: what bass players do you know of that picked up bass because that was the opening and not because they enjoyed the bass?

yeah, I'm sure of that. I'm just specifically interested in famous bassists. I am about the only person I've met in real life that actually wanted to play bass. Of course having played trombone, baritone, tuba the bass cleff was just more comfortable for me and I was biased toward rythm

I have always heard that Kip Winger didn't actually play bass. But I've never been ofered any proof of that. It's jsut what I've always heard.

we know he did ballet, though.

oh, and i've only wanted to play bass. i own a g**tar, never touch the thing, and i played alto sax in school, but the bass is my one true love, and i knew it would be when i first touched one.

Jimi Hendrix did a lot of the bass work in recordings. He went so far as to erase what Noel Redding had done, and go over it. Redding was guitarist who got put on bass when he joined the Experience.

Alex Such from Bon Jovi - I recall hearing that most of his lines were done by someone else in the studio.

that's me.

I started playing bass in church because I was a guitarist and we lost our drummer so our regular bass player switched to drums and I moved over to bass and started to learn. I did my first "audition" with my band on guitar and after listening to the recording thought that it would sound way better if i played the bass...so I just started learning the bass out of necessity.

I actually started playing bass because my church needed a player. I was an up and comer as a guitarist and was actually a better guitarist than both of the guitarists in the church, but because of the whole "I'm a pastor's kid" thing I decided to play the bass and let the pastor's son stay on guitar. Man am I glad I did. I'm in love with the instrument and only play the guitar on special occasions. I'm a low end for lifer now.
