It also sounds like you might be a bass player yourself, the way you're talking about Foderas and Roscoes and such... sounds like this might be "his" bass, but you might play it a little bit too? :ninja: lol

I'll add a vote for a Peavey Cirrus or Modulus Quantum. I've got a Cirrus 6 and a Quantum 5 and both are great basses. I'd lean towards a Quantum for "old school rocker" though.

Also, if you can check with him on the sly, ask him what he thinks about neck-through basses. The Cirrus is neck-through, as are Carvin basses (as seen in the pic Antti posted). Some players (like me) do have a preference, they sound different! :hiding::ninja: lol

Nope, not a bass player, I just read a lot and pay attention (I'm a writer). He's got the music, I've got the words. As for neck-throughs v. bolt-ons, he's got both, and has explained the pros and cons of both to me. Love the idea of the Quantum (thanks, HGREGS, for the heads' up on the truss rod and the warning, Joe Gress, about the thick neck on the Warwick). Many, many things to take into account.

You men are fabulous. I truly appreciate all of the input and promise to let you know what the final outcome is.;)

I agree on the Ibanez. I find that Ibanez necks feel familiar, whichever shape you're used to. They sound great for rock, jazz, anything...

That particular Ibanez is a bargain as well (and fantastic quality)...you could even get him 2 for that price :p.

Also, you can't go wrong with a Musicman but the 6 hasn't been out for long so you may well struggle to find one used before Christmas.

Check out Curbow basses as well, if you can find one :hmm:.

You can't go wrong with Spectors or Warwicks. Yamaha make some pretty good 6ers too.

Sorry to throw yet more basses into the mix :hiding:...good luck is all I have to say. Whatever you get him, he will be happy, I've no doubt about that.

Hmm, she may be working overtime for that one however as well intended as this thread is she may want to drop little hints to get a feel for the brand and model he would be most interested in. Girls are good at that. He wouldn't go out and get her an expensive evening gown and hope she like it..............or would he?
Leave it up to us and he'll have every bass we would want. :help:

though it would be cool for you to buy something from a TB'er, Guitar Center has a 30 day return policy, you could always coordinate the time you bought something to where he could return it. That way you get the benefit of surprising him with the bass, and even more cool points (is that possible?) of ensuring he gets an instrument he likes.

They usually have a resocking fee for returns now, but maybe you could get them to waive that upon inital purchase if you explained the situation?

Even though this thread is cool as heck, you should edit the OP and remove any clues as to your identity (your hubbys basses, age, etc..). Just saying he likes hard rock would probably be enough. Yes i am paranoid.

Oh, my vote is for that Smith on the classifieds. Holy wow.

A used Modulus Quantum 6 is the best one you will find in that price range. If it has Bartolini pickups it will be warmer. If you can find one with a Chechen or rosewood fretboard it will be warmer still. It just out classes the other brands mentioned IMHO. I've had mine for 9 years and 4 other ones for years. Never a worry and played a ton. I've owned most of the other brands mentioned and there is just no comparison.

Alt of votes for the Modulus Q6 and Peavey Cirrus. I own a Q6 and had a Cirrus. Get him a Peavey TL6. This is the bass the Modulus plays second fiddle to. It also (IMHO) plays better then the Cirrus. Also one can be had for around $500.00 to $600.00. If for some reason he didnt like it, and I can't imagine he wouldn't, you can always get your money back. Guys that know this bass are always on the look out for them.

Two options.

1)If he REALLY loves his groovetools, you could get him a matching/replacement one.

2)Since you're a cool wife, I'm sure you could sit down next time he's playing and get into a conversation like "why do you want 6 strings? 5 seems to sound great" blah blah blah, then he will explain why he wants one, then you can dig in like "what colour would you get because I like/dislike the colour of this one." then he will describe the colour he wants and you say "any pictures?" and so on and so on. It's only october, pretty easy to lead him into picking it out for himself.

My recommendation is the Bongo.

I'm a 6 string player, and have owned many, many basses. Modulus, Carvin, and just about every other bass out there. My personal instrument is a LowEnd Jazz 6 (but that was $3500), which is amazing. But I think the MusicMan sound is closer to what you're looking for.

You can't beat the build quality of MM for the money, either.
