I'll drag it out (I was wrong, it's in the back bedroom not the living room) this weekend and make some cell phone clips...
Well we'll have to settle for a 3 string sample, the G came off the tuner and won't go back on.... forgive my total lack of chops and intonation on this...
Of course, you realize at that point, it'd just be an upright bass, right?
Yeah, except for the full octave of notes clear of the body.
And the lack of fretboard radius - makes it way easier for me to play than an actual upright.
Sounds like you are really yanking those (flatwound) strings. Except for the volume level, mine sounds unplugged very similar. I'd like to hear one with guts, since those would have been the strings they were designed for.
No, actually - mine came with guts, I gave them away to a collector on here - but they were originally designed for special bronze roundwounds that came with it, from what I've read about them. Guts would be (were) way too quiet. These are GHS Crossover EABG strings, recommended after a long chat with Jon Moody of GHS. Loudest things I've tried on it, but they don't quite reach the tuners without splicing.
It's funny - some stuff is easier on the double bass, other stuff on the bass guitar.
Surprising sound. Not at all what I expected. I kind of like it. In a mix it probably sits quite well - especially in period music. Thanks for taking the time out to do this.
Yeah, it has some similarities with an upright, but lots of differences, too. It's got mwah, but it's not the same. Much more sustain than a typical upright, too, but that's as much these strings as anything else. I tried regular upright strings on it and wasn't happy with the volume. The thick flat top requires higher string tension to really get it moving.
