BBE MAXCOM vs BBE SONIC MAXIMIZER PLUS A DBX COMPRESSOR?

Hello all,

I am currently waiting on my new eden wt1205 head and 610 cab. Im very excited!!!!!!!!

yesterday i went to the store to try out some stuff and I put a 882 sonic maximizer through that head into a 410 and it sounded amazing! I have always wanted a sonic maxmizer and will be getting one either way!

But my dilemma. People say the onboard compressors on the Edens really suck. So i was thinking either to get the BBE maxcom which is a compressor and sonic maximizer in one or getting a sonic maximizer seperately and dbx compressor. The thing is I do not know which dbx compressors to look at. I was looking at Bongomania's reviews on compressors and they are very helpful. He seems to suggest the DBX ones as the best. i also hear that the maxcom has very flimsy knobs and faceplates and that it will not be able to stand tough road abuse. I am playing death metal and plan to tour heavily so i want something solid. What is your guy's opinions? and if you say DBX then which DBX would you recommend as best for bass?

I'd recommend getting seperate units. That way, when you get tired of what the Sonic Maximizer is doing to your sound, you can remove it from your rack and still have a compressor.

As for compressors, a used dbx 166A or Rane DC-24 would be my recommendation.

In general most of the eden compressors aren't really compressors, but on the 1205 it is different. The compresors on those work really well. I would wait and try it out before you buy a new one. If you buy one, I would get the DBX 160a

Definately go with separate units. I owned a MAXCOM for around 24 hours once - noisiest piece of junk I've ever owned. Poorly made and prone to grounding issues.

I would like to know what is different about the 1205 compressor from other eden compressors?

Also I believe sonic maxmizers sound great when you set them up properly without insane amounts of lo contour.

And if I do go for a compressor it has to be 2 channels so I can use each channel for a channel on my 1205 (which has 2 channels)

hey Rumbler,

On the WT series Eden Heads, the compressor was more of a limiter, not a true compressor. The 1205 is based off of the 405 which has more of a (as Eden calls it) DBX style compressor with an adjustable threshold. I still think a dbx is a superior compressor, but I do think the compressor on the 1205's are much better than the WT series.

Well I have been doing alot of reading on old posts.

Alot of sonic maxmizer users seemed to love it then hate it. I personally think at stupid settings it sounds horrible but set proportionately that it sounds great. I mean I know of alot of players who use them and have monster tones, one being robert trujillo whose tone is out of this world in my opinion but what do you guys think about these bad boys?

If it was me, I would go with a pedal version of the maximizer (for low cost and easy in/out of rig) and for a two-channel compressor maybe the dbx 166 (any version) or 1066, or a Symetrix 525 (2-chan. version of the 501 that I recommend highly).
