are we talking mic'd up cabs here, or is a line-out from an amp head to a mixer acceptable? Because the latter is my usual recording method
Sometimes I'll take the line out of my head too, if it sounds decent that way, it is decent, you know how it goes. I prefer mic'd clips because that's how I do my sound in the studio, so it's a little easier for me to imagine the tone I'd be getting with the whole works on it. And of course the main reason I do clips is to critique my own tone as it's going to appear at the gig and in the studio, so mic'ing is what I like to do so I can best analyze what I've got going on.
I just think everything sounds so cheesy and plastic-y without ever seeing an amp, you know? And I don't know if it's really the pedal that sounds fake or just the lack of an amp that causes it to sound bad. I play passive basses without any preamp on them and to record that direct, straight into a soundcard, every time it just sounds fake to me. Plus one of the things I like to analyze about a pedal is how it interacts with the amp at least, if not the cab too. To me that's a big part of the pedal's mojo, how it reacts with different amps.
I know some people might be disappointed when they hear me record some dirtbox through my V4 or SVT, and don't get the same sound with their solid state amp, but like I said I mainly do my clips for myself. I just figure that while I'm doing them I may as well share.

i hate to exhume this thread from the tombs, but I just read somewhere that the Soul Vibe has an internal frequency range/center trimpot
... these go for under a hundred... i have been looking for a simple vibe/rotating cab pedal since unloading my vibro-thang... somebody PLEASE come up with a reason I shouldn't buy this...

not if it works for me. I've got a spot on my board for a vibe and the "manual" trimpot and affordability bump this to the top of my list.
I only have a couple three (ok, 5) rotating slots on my board, and that's just because I haven't found an ideal pedal for them. But for the most part I use six pedals* that have not changed in a while and I don't see myself replacing (not on this board, anyway). Maybe I can get a breadboard but never actually build anything, that would be the ultimate in pedal caprice!

Hey, that's a great idea! Just get a big breadboard and build up a whole pedalboard on that. But if you want a vibe pedal on your board then go for it.
My goal is to take those 1967-75 "vintage" bass tones and make it more beefier in the low end and space-ier. I'm going to end up going with a trem (I've narrowed it down to the Empress) but a uni vibe clone would be great.
So far so good. I'm waiting for a gig report on it.
Uni Vibe and vibrato pedals seem rather complex so it's something I'd rather buy than build.

i mean sheesh, at that price, what's the point of trying to build one? the only mod I'd want is already inside...
Indeed. I'm sure it costs less for the large manufacturers, but considering it would cost you $40-50 to build up a clone, pedals like that for under $100 are a pretty good deal.
it wouldn't only cost 40-50 bucks to build a clone, it would take hours, and there's a very good chance it would cause me a great deal of frustration, and might not even work at all. I am decent with a soldering iron but I have zero electronics background, like most "musicians".
I just found a soul vibe for under 80 shipped, new with warranty. OK, so I will probably violate the warranty and return policy about 5 minutes after I open the box by tweaking the trimpot. Point is, it's not pricey.
