beater bass refinish questions

I was inspired by this thread (Invalid Link Removed).

I want to refinish my beater bass in another color (currently white) using some spray cans so I'm not expecting perfection.

I'm planning on spraying an olive green matte finish over the lightly sanded white finish. Will a matte spray can be forgiving of imperfections? The thread above implies that this would be pretty straight forward but I'm wondering if there something I'm overlooking.

Thanks in advance

ANY imperfections in the base layer or wood will be visible through any kind of paint unless you spray it with bedliner..which is like 00 sandpaper on skin, so I don't recommend it.

That may be OK. The minimum you need is to roughen the surface enough to get a good paint bond, but there is MUCH more to learn. Read some threads here on TB and you can gather a lot more info that will help you make informed choices.

OTOH, you can just buff up the finish, strip the instrument, spray it and see what you get. It's not permanent, you can always strip it off and start over.

I've gone the way stiletto reccomends, paintstripper and then sanding. I finished sanding to 1500 grit today, and it feels (and looks) super-smooth. can i start spraying on top of that, or do i have to get it a bit rougher? sorry for hi-jacking the thread!

Is it actually down to bare wood, or just the sealer coat?

If it bare wood you'll wanna use some sort of grain filler to get a level surface.

If its sealer, then you can just go ahead and spray. I would scuff it up with a heavier grit first, though. 220 is what I usually spray over. Those super high grit papers are for the final finish.
