before i go custom

  1. i'm a six string player and i currently have a yamaha TRBII and i'm not happy with it for a number of reasons - it just doesn't get the kind've growl i want, it's really unbalanced i.e the low end is HUGE but as soon as you go above 12th fret theres not much going on and the preamp isn't so wonderful etc etc.

anyway i'm after a new sixer which has more of a rickenbacker grind to it and i'm not sure what would get me there, so do any of you guys have any idea? i can spend a fair bit but i'd like to keep the price down thus trying to avoid going boutique and spending to much.

Warwick or Spector will likely take you there for ~$2k

  3. Tried a Bongo 6?

I ordered a Carvin Bunny 6 a couple weeks ago, mainly for the balance feature alone.

Havn't gotten it yet so obviously I don't know what it's like, but that's certainly a very high bang/buck ratio possiblity to look at for only about 1300.

The Bongo would be an awesome sounding choice too but I don't know how well balanced it is (the 4's and 5's don't balance too wonderfully well)....

  5. its a bit shallow but i really don't like the looks of warwicks or bongo sixers

That's fine. If you don't like the look of an instrument, you wont like how you look holding that instrument. If you don't like that hideous sweater your wife bought you 5 Christmases ago, do you still wear it all the time? No.

Playability, Tone, and Aesthetics are the 3 biggest and most important deciding factors in a bass IMO. If you're prepared to spend some decent money on a bass, you want to get something you think is nice to look at.

Nothing wrong with not liking a bass for aesthetic reasons.

  7. Call me nuts, but I can dial up a very growly Mid range intensive sound on my MTD KZ6. I'm doing the conversion in my head, but my guess would be in the neighborhood of 1000 pounds. Plus, you get some very nearly boutique quality tops and great construction. It won't sound exaclty like Ric, (I have one and compare them often), but dialing in a good mid rangey sound is pretty easy with this thing.

Don't always associate "grind" and "Growl", with any given bass. It doesn't always rely on the bass itself. Think playing style, signal chain, amp, etc. Concerning the other issues, how long have you had the bass, if you're not really happy with it?

  9. i've had the trbII for about 3 or 4 years now and feel its about time to get my be all and end all bass. i have a pretty grindy playstyle just the trb doesn't really lend itself very well to the sound as it tends to muddy things up fast

i like the look of the MTD KZ6 though i'll have to investigate it a bit more ;o

  12. I agree its porbably impossible to find the end all be all, but that MTD will do you real nice.

Yeah, good luck with that, there's literally thousands of dudes here that are still in that process of finding that "end all, be all" bass after 10, 20 or so years ;)

If you find yours, please tell me what the secret is ;)

No, but I'd say try a Spector euro.
