begginer bassist, what does amp heads work for

The “Go to GC and try all the combos they have” would be a grand total of maybe 2-3 amps, usually Rumbles, at least at my local GC, where the “bass department” is….. limited. That said, the Rumble is a decent amp, but agree you’d need the 500 to keep up with a loud drummer. They have used gear on a random basis, or go online and see what they can get ahold of.

I've found that my Fender Rumble 200 has been more than enough for my stay-at-home, play-alone, not-in-a-band, hobby playing. When I picked the amp, my only requirement was to scare the cat and piss off the neighbors. The cat doesn't care and the windows rattle so much I can't get loud enough for the neighbors to hear me. And my playing is so bad I don't really want anyone to hear me anyway.

Bring your bass to music stores that have a varied inventory of bass amplifiers. Try as many as they have. Don't be shy ..ask lots of questions and watch how they set up the gear... That's how we all learned. Don't be pressured to buy or jump on anything right away. Write down the names of the gear you liked best and go for a coffee, go online and check the reviews of those exact rigs. ( they will often send you to us at Talk Bass for reviews!)When you find something you like and is reviewed favorably... go back and discuss prices, payments, and especially warranties. ..have fun! and welcome to the world of bass players!

Fender Rumble 40 for at home practice. Anything bigger is silly. And that's likely good enough for any auditions too. I probably wouldn't invest in anything bigger or more complex unless you actually get in a band. At that point will be anything between a good preamp because they go direct and a full stack because they're old school.

I'm in two bands now and one is all direct where I literally take my bass and a preamp and a band where I'm required to have a half stack minimum.

Communicate with any people you talk to about bands - ask what their setup is and what long-term expectations are.
