Beginner 5er

If you like crunchy grndy modern tone/ The Jackson JS3V wpould be great choice and in your budget range. Esp ltd and Ibanez fivers are great chouce to for your budget. Occassionaly one can find nice used five string BC Rich Inovators and warlocks to for your budget. Ibanez SR305 and ESP Ltd F-155dx with its 35 inch scale as couple other great basses for around the same $350 price range new.

Squier Vintage Modified Jazz V.

If for some reason the Squier badge bothers you (and there are a bazillion threads here which rightfully explain why it should’t bother you), perhaps look for a gently-used Fender Standard Jazz V or — as previously suggested — an Ibanez Soundgear.

Best of luck with your search, and we look forward to finding out what you actually end up purchasing.

If you're looking at Squier and your budget is $500, definitely go with the VM.

I've owned and player the VM and the Affinity, I still think the Affinity with new electronics runs circles around the VM.

No black plastic binding or blocks but those necks are crazy good and with some nice pots and pups you have a great sounding and playing 5.

The L2500 Tribute is really nice, I've owned several of the US L2500 and a Korean Tribute with TRIBUTE in big letters on the headstock, but not the newest Tribute. That was a real nice playing and sounding bass for half the price of the USA.

I can't recommend the ESP LTD B-15 highly enough, for the money it's absolutely fantastic - looks good, pretty light, the pickups aren't too bad, 24 frets... I'd take it over a Squier any day (and I love my Squiers). For a bit more money the B-55 has another pickup, for more versatility.
