Nice find! Congratulations!

You'll also hear a gazillion suggestions for new strings, but if you like how it sounds as it is, just play it. If/when you do want to change, I'd put in a vote for DR Sunbeams -- made a nice warm tone on my J. GHS Pressurewounds are a good option if you like a slicker string.

Today I stopped by a local guitar shop where I had purchased a very nice used Ibanez acoustic/electric bass last week. I don't know what made me stop by this shop. I just happened to be in the area and wanted to look at a nylon string acoustic guitar. As soon as I walked in the owner asked me how I liked the Ibanez. I told him I didn't like it much but my son loved it so I gave it to him.

I told him I was looking for a Fender J or P bass. He said well I forgot to show you this one the other day when you came in. He goes in the back and brings out a nice hard case and when I open it up there she was. I plugged her in and played a little bit. What a nice playing and sounding bass.

This shop deals mostly in acoustic stuff. Lots of guitars, banjo's, mandolin's and such. They very rarely has any electric stuff. I asked him how much he wanted and he said make me an offer. I said how does $200 out the door sound. He said it sounded like I just bought myself a bass guitar. He agreed so fast I should have probably low balled him but it's a very nice guitar and worth every penny. As the saying goes around here "Picts or it didn't happen". Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Now I begin the search for a nice used amp.

There are a lot of fifty-ish guys on here who came back to bass after a looooong time. (I'm another, though I was playing drums in the mean time.)

Have fun and enjoy your new toy.

Ampeg BA 115 amps pop up on CL (at least in my area) regularly in the $250 range.

Wow, nice score! Are you sure there's nothing wrong with it?

My story is similar to yours - Got my first bass at about 16, jammed a little but then trailed off after a year or two. Then it got stolen when I was about 21, living in NYC, and I never replaced it because I wasn't really playing it anyway. That was about 1992 or 93. Fast forward 17 years and I find myself really obsessing over bass lines to music I'm listening to and thinking how they would be played, so I finally gave in and picked up a used Ibanez off CL. Four years and probably ten or eleven basses later, here I am, playing in a couple of bands and, I think, finally content with my setup...

This is exactly what this bass is. Finally had a chance to have it setup. Put some Fender flat wounds on it and it sounds sweet.

On another note got myself another bass for Christmas. I picked up a SBMM Ray34CA. It was on clearance at GC so got a killer deal on it. I love the way it sounds also. Both are nice basses with totally different sounds.

Welcome back Edge! You my friend did awesome on that bass! I'm 54 and have been playing since '71 (yikes). You can't go wrong with a Fender they are still the backbone of the bass world. I'm more of a Gibson guy but I have quite a few Fender P basses and a '62 AVRI Jazz in the stable. Enjoy!

Thanks guys. I am starting off like I have never picked up a bass before and I am loving every minute of it. Going to start taking some lessons this week. This is so much more enjoyable this time around. I have a lot more patience this time around. Plus with the internet there are unlimited resources available for help. Finding used instruments and equipment is much easier now also.
