"Beginner" Bass Guitars - Under 550CND

Lamusic.ca They MIGHT have a deal but be careful, i saw an SR305 going for around $600 something. (????????) If you do go through them, look around on the net for a cheaper price. They price beat, and if its over 200, shippings free :D

Buying new in Canada is just not worth it. And right now, Buying new and shipping from the states isnt worth it. 60 bucks shipping, and depending on the item its about 50 for customs. Not to mention our fail dollar.

Im not sure if anyone said it yet, but for amps, and even Bass wise, PEAVEY.
You can get one of those old Peavey 115 combo which will shake the walls (of your bedroom :P). These can be had for around 100 bucks if you wait.

That leaves you with around 450. You could get those new Squiers. OR you can find an older Ibanez. Most of the Soundgears have SLICK necks. Since you playED guitar, these necks will make for an easier transition.

I've also seen a few Deans on CL and kijijijiji for 450.

Anyway good luck with this!

Thanks for all the info. In total (after taxes) for the bass and the amp, I should have around $950. So 850ish bucks before tax. By the Peavey 115 combo, did you mean the 1x15" speaker ones? Or the 15watt ones. I can't see the Peavey 115 combo that I am looking at going for 100 (for a 200w bass...). Just want to get that cleared up.

You may also want to look at a GK backline 210. 200W@8Ω, 300w@4Ω. The Acoustic looks interesting but the power is listed at 200W4Ω so unless it's rated for 2Ω it's either putting out less without an extension cab or the extension port is useless. The GK is about $150 more then the Acoustic new, so that may put it out of your budget, but you may be able to find one used.

I'm guessing the extension port is useless in this case. Either way, I wholeheartedly believe the Acoustic will sound amazing in any situatuion.

sugarysnacks, I didn't realize it was so hard to get gear in Canadaland. Good hunting on your search for something used. That Peavey looked pretty tasty. Can't believe its just shy of 100lbs though!

Hey guys.I got a bass! I bought a used ESP D-5. It was in perfect condition. Very very nice guitar. Plays great. Very happy with it. Definitely a great bass to switch from guitar to bass. Thanks for everyone's input

Now for the amp. There is a Yorkville BM200 for sale (blue carpet one) and it is 300CND used. If I get this, would buying a 2x10" extension cabinet be a good idea? Some people in the reviews said it really helps the amp. Would a Peavey TVX 210 [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] OR a Gallien Krueger 210BLX http://www.lamusic.ca/default.asp?szNav=Product&PID=19587 be a good extension for this amp? Thanks a lot again guys!

(sorry if this should be in amps now. I didn't feel another thread should be needed.)

It appears that a 4 ohm extension cabinet is what the BM200 needs to deliver its full 200 watts. 'BM200 - Bass Combo - 200w, 15 inch / Tweeter': Invalid Link Removed

The Peavey TVX 210 is 4 ohms--and $300. For that kind of dough you could buy a 2nd BM200.

I was told by another member in a PM that I should get an 8ohm extension, because a 4ohm would push the amp beyond its comfortable limits. Can someone explain the ohm stuff to me? I am kinda lost with it :p

According to the specs. in this link, it appears that a 4 ohm extension cabinet is what the BM200 needs to deliver its full 200 watts into a minimum load of 2 ohms (its internal 15" speaker would be 4 ohms. Together with an external load of 4 ohms, four divided by two = 2 ohms). 'BM200 - Bass Combo - 200w, 15 inch / Tweeter': http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=166225

The Peavey TVX 210 is 4 ohms--and $300. For that kind of dough you could buy a 2nd BM200 which would give you:

- 2 complete amps, thus twice the wattage (as well, if one breaks down, you'd still have an amp to use while the other is being repaired)

- 2 x 15" speakers (which would move twice as much air as a single 15" speaker = more bass)

- the opportunity to run effects in stereo (stereo chorus would be one)

- the option of placing one amp on either side of the stage for covering a room in a more even manner when it is advantageous to do so.

I found this amp in a city close by for 400. Would this be loud enough for what I need? I was reading some reviews and one said that you get 185w with the 2x10".

While I am aware that Ashdown is a respected bass amp brand, I have no experience with them.

You may wish to do some research before you spend money on any amp:

Ah, but then I found a Yorkville xm200 for $300. Effectively the same wattage, but I will have the money to add a 2x10 speaker to the yorkville. I just don't know which one to choose!

Hi SS.

When contemplating any amp made by YS or Traynor, you may wish to seek advice here: 'Yorkville/Traynor Club?!': Invalid Link Removed
