Beginner questions - Pickups

I just had some dude at sam ash tell me that I needed a bass pickup--that an electric guitar pickup won't work.

any pickup will produce sound. it really just depends on what sound youre looking for. i always love when music store people try to impart wisdom like this on people. i once tried to buy a $200 bass synth pedal, and the guy from MARS music (now out off business hahahahaha) said "you dont want that, here try this. its just as good" and he handed me a $35 multi effect pedal. i proceeded to drop it on the floor and walked out of the store.

EMG selects are inexpensive, so are Wilkinsons, yet both sound suprisingly good, almost too good for the prices. You can find a plethora of inexpensive pick-ups on EBAY, and many sound great. The ones listed would be my first choice for inexpensive and readilly available.
