Less barking, more wagging!
What really helped me was learning to also use the 1-2-4 fingering like you would on an upright bass in the lower fret range.
I would alternate practicing one finger per fret and the 1-2-4 fingering, now I find I actually prefer using my pinky over my ring finger atleast half of the time.
+1 I start my students with the Simandl method, with the pinky and ring fingers used together, and teach them other left-hand methods later. Pushing students to learn one-finger-per-fret from the very beginning often leads to frustration instead of confidence - especially students with small hands.
When I was first learning to play bass (back in the sixties), my DB teacher taped my pinky and ring finger together until I learned to use them in unison.
