Don't be a cheap skate, or stay away from boutique brands and stick with major manufacturers. The appeal for many boutique brands is about being hand built and a quality of detail that a SMD build does not offer. Boutique brands are also able to offer customization that the big boys are not able to. SMD builds offer lower costs, faster manufacturing and a certain level of consistency one to another. Some builders, likely due to their other or day jobs and formal education, are able to harness the advantages of SMD and in some cases offer a pedal that is a hybrid or combination of the two methods.
The video above shows how Behringer Bass Brassmaster is an example hybrid manufacturing with a mix of SMD placed components as well as hand placed parts.
With pedals you are paying not just for a list of parts but also the R&D needed for painstaking design, often many steps of building prototypes and testing until a design is ready for the consumer. Josh of JHS did a really detailed video about this concerning the ROSS venture and the
cost of making pedals .
