Behringer announces Bass Brassmaster Fuzz

The Behringer VP1 Vintage Phaser is amazing!

Better than EHX's own Nano reissue of the Small Stone (and yes, I've owned one, so do know what I am speaking about).

The Behinger clone is more true to the original big box one.

I own two.

Bought two at the same time, cause they were so dirt cheap, and I knew about Behringers questionable quality control.

They both sound great though, however not entirely identical, one of them doesn't just sound great, it sounds amazing, with a slightly fatter tone.

I assume this difference is down to high tolerance of the not doubt dirt cheap electronical components used to build these.
There should be a trimmer inside. Phasers need to be adjusted just right. There's a small window on the trimmer where the phasing effect is strong. Tweak that. It's possible it wasn't set correctly at the factory.
 
Mine just arrived. I'll plug it in later this week, but the first thing I notice is that it's a boat anchor. Very heavy pedal. Pleasantly surprised at that fact.

Behringer is showing the pedal market how it's supposed to be done. If they can afford to sell this pedal so cheap, what's up with the boutique guys? Especially after the R&D time has been paid for a million times over.
Boutique guys are not large companies like Behringer. Their numbers are totally different. And they don't use cheap SMD components assembled by machines, they select components and hand solder them.
Why compare apples to oranges?
 
Ah, now I understand what you meant with the silicon Fuzz Face reference.

Yeah, I think you're right, that's probably the most likely scenario. I guess it doesn't matter as long as it sounds great and you're not expecting an exact clone of the Mk2 (which unfortunately I think many guitar players will, when Behringer has copied the visual appearance of the Mk2...).

Btw, from what I've read online (which I always take with a grain of salt...) there were actually two versions of the Mk3. One was silicon and the other was germanium. It seems that the Mk4 was the first version that was silicon only. But please correct me if I'm wrong!?!?
Germanium initially. Sola Sounds started using silicon in the 70s.

Well, those boutique guys had better get on learning smd and machine building then because the prices are too damn high.
 
Markus Reeves has reviewed the Brassmaster. He's a master of point to point pedals and fuzz enthusiast. He's a boutique builder.
He demos it on guitar but also gives his assessment of the build quality.

Thanks. A good review that, as you say, would have been even better if he just played the Bass Brassmaster Fuzz through a bass guitar. The teardown in the front of the video is helpful. All analog path with a transformer in there. Sound demo, not so great but there are plenty of other videos to find out there with it on bass. Thank you again.

Well, those boutique guys had better get on learning smd and machine building then because the prices are too damn high.
Don't be a cheap skate, or stay away from boutique brands and stick with major manufacturers. The appeal for many boutique brands is about being hand built and a quality of detail that a SMD build does not offer. Boutique brands are also able to offer customization that the big boys are not able to. SMD builds offer lower costs, faster manufacturing and a certain level of consistency one to another. Some builders, likely due to their other or day jobs and formal education, are able to harness the advantages of SMD and in some cases offer a pedal that is a hybrid or combination of the two methods.

The video above shows how Behringer Bass Brassmaster is an example hybrid manufacturing with a mix of SMD placed components as well as hand placed parts.

With pedals you are paying not just for a list of parts but also the R&D needed for painstaking design, often many steps of building prototypes and testing until a design is ready for the consumer. Josh of JHS did a really detailed video about this concerning the ROSS venture and the cost of making pedals .

My issue with R&D time is where does it end? After a certain number of units sold that R&D time is paid for. I don't begrudge anyone for making money or running a business. But I find it hard to stomach that I am still paying for the R&D time of say an early (insert your favorite boutique brand here) pedal. After a while the profit margins on these pedals seems obscene. Ultimately we all decide with our wallets. Behringer has my vote of confidence with these amazing new offerings.

Tell that to the military, big pharma and the oil industry long before taking your curmudgeon to pedal builders.

Watch that JHS video to get an idea of the costs involved. R&D is but a small part of it.
 
Finally landed my pre-order in Australia. First time using a pedal like this. Getting some pretty out there tones, but I have a few questions for those with more experience around the circuit:

Brass volume: obviously just volume for the main, affected signal. This isn't doing anything else, right?
Bass volume: I would assume clean blend, but doesn't seem to be. Allows no signal through when the sensitivity is down and this solo'd still has some dirt. More like a cleaner, but still gritty, signal that you can run in parallel?
Sensitivity: Gain control for both signals? Seems to sound heavier/more fuzzy to me around 11 o'clock than full bore, is that just because there is less compression?

Brass switch: something to do with the mids? Possibly a mid-scoop on 1 and a mid-boost on 2?
Harmonic switch: the manual made me think this would be either octave up or octave down, but it does not seem to be that at all. I do not have the ear or the experience to even guess at this. Would love to be told by someone who knows!

Scratch that bass volume point - it does allow signal with the sensitivity turned down, but it feels a bit weak/high pass-y and does get some hair on it as the sensitivity goes up, even if the brass is all the way down. That's what I get for posting an hour after playing!

Someone posted a fix on Facebook and I can confirm it’s wonderful: C10 is an input capacitor (full size), all you need to do is solder a larger capacitor to the existing one. Easy to do in the back of the pedal!

I’ve done it and not my dry signal is FAT as my bypassed
