Behringer Bass V-AMP Pro - Part II: Get On Back, Jack, Do It Again...

I have some pretty good bass patches for my V-Amp Pro that I've come up with over the last ten years of owning it. If anyone's interested in them, hit me up. I also have some really good guitar patches. Happy to share.

This thing is cool as all hell!

So my Girlfriend surprises me with this unit for Christmas and I am all sorts of excited. I mucked around with it for a bit and decided that the MIDI editor was gonna be my friend. All that "Push these three buttons, then with your other hand twist this knob, then use your left elbow to tweak that setting and your right big toe to adjust that" was just not for me. After a few false starts due to bad MIDI cables I finally got the editor up and going and OH. MY. COW!!! This thing is cool!

So far I'm a fan of the GK (White Face) and Trace 4X10 models. My ancient Samick has an equally old set of SD "Active EQ" PJ's and man alive that thing officially roars.

So yeah, count me as one unbelievably excited, happy camper.

Of course, I now have questions of those more learned than I, which should be just about everyone.

1) I fell into a couple basses this week, a Squier P-Bass Special and an Ibby GSR-200. When I started out I followed the setup tips list for a few things but opted not to dime the gain as the Active EQ's are rather warm. The tuner worked fine so I left the global gain alone. However, when I switch to the Squier (Predictably) the output falls way off, the tone loses a fair bit of muscle and just generally sounds anemic. Is this something that can be dealt with within the patch, or should I just clone the patch off and raise the gain at patch level? Or is there something else I can do?

2) When I go to save a patch, it offers an option to "Append to library". What exactly is that?

I don't use effects much so this is not exactly an effects question - but not really an amp question either.

I use a channel strip to drive a power amp and I love the range of tone I can get from it. 4 band eq including lo-mid and hi-mid parametric. I also have a Behringer V-Amp which also gives a good range of tone control and the added advantage of having programmable presets. What I don't like about the V-Amp is the lack of dedicated physical controls for every parameter - I have to delve into the menu to get at them whereas the channel strip allows me to reach for a knob and instantly tweak the tone.

I guess the same would apply to most if not all multi-effects. For example, the Zoom B3 looks like a very capable box of tricks but has even fewer dedicated knobs than the V-Amp. Maybe I'm just too old school, having grown up with all-analogue gear with a separate knob for each parameter.

Is it just me and is there anything that would offer the best of both worlds?

When dealing with basses of different output levels, there is no way around but to set the MASTER INPUT GAIN as per the bass you are currently using with the V-AMP

Unfortunately, as you've figured out this is a global setting and not one at patch level

dincz, from one old school to another, I would highly recommend you at least try a B3 through that same channel strip

Using both together? I can imagine finishing up with a whole lot of EQ settings all fighting against each other unless I was very disciplined about using them!

The impossible ideal would be to motorize the pots on the channel strip and install a midi interface

My mention of using the same channel strip was a ruse, but one with good intention

Regarding the original wish for dedicated knobs, I think you would be quite pleased at how Zoom accomplishes this on the B3 with even fewer knobs than the V-AMP. The user interface there is both powerful and intuitive, even for us old school.

Taking another look at the B3, it does seem to be a good compromise. I guess the 3 controls on each section effectively become the dedicated controls I'm fretting about?

I have a question about delay: is it possible to set the BPM with Tap Tempo and then set delay time a fraction of this rhythm tempo? For example a 1/8th note, 1/8th dotted,...

Hey guys it finally arrived from.GC. albeit a week and a half late. A few questions. How do I know if its been reset. And the midi pedal Behringer makes matches up to tbis correct. Alsp how can I hook it up to my computer.

On a side note just used whatever the machine fired up with with the corus sound. Thru a small pa sounded a lil tinny bit not band. I meed to get it thru a bigger more powerful system. And i actually like the chorus on this very close to yhe cure sound. And im doing a punk new wave band so i may use this live if i can get some huge bottom out pf my head and cans with this. Also ised a octave pedal with it. Kinda nice. Thanks in advance.

If in doubt if it has been reset, just perform one yourself to be sure. Instructions for this can be found in the user manual, Part I of this thread, and other places.

IMHO, the Behringer MIDI controller pedal is the best match for the V-AMP.

Connection to your computer for control of the V-AMP can only be handled through a MIDI adapter to your PC. Others have posted about this throughout both Part I and Part II of this thread. Connection for recording can be handled both analog and digitally depending on your computer hardware.

Yeah i was able to find a cool.Cure Sound, as well as the nice Tony Levin Sound with MXR pedal. And a decent Kings X sound. Im not the programming type but he he think its a keeper. ONCE I really dig into it

I have a Carvin Red Line 1000 head. AHot rodded Peavey Tx 2x10 cab 300i watts and a Ampeg hLf pro 4x10 slightly modded. So dyingbto get this thing some thunder. Thing i love about.carvin is it separates highs and lows as well as the gate and compressor. May use it as a power amp. But think i may also just do power amp and vamp. And yes i own the VT pedal just in case. Followed Charlies.advice on this one lol..

Hey Charlie if i dont go power amp rte what would be best way to run vamp thru my redline. Its a carvin 1000Red redline. I tried to load photos bit i couldnt.

2 nd question didnt have a manual with this so i wondered i see quicktip guides and all. Is there kne page where i can find all the info or is it separate

That particular amp features an EFFECT RETURN jack that I would use to connect the V-AMP

Well it looks like I'll be leaving the pre-amp/power amp arena and moving to an all in one head. Finally found one that, for now, gives me the tone I'm looking for. So it's time to "retire" the V-Amp Pro and Crown setup. Still going to use the V-Amp POD to front my combo 300 and for home use. Trying to go simple for once. Wish me luck!!

I picked up a Hartke LH1000. Stupid loud and just has a great sweepable EQ. I'm able to use the bass to tweak what I need instead of the V-Amp. Made my Ampeg PR410 come alive so very happy. Now I get to listen to my guitar player with his Marshal half stack tell me to turn down.
