Behringer MX3242X subgroups?

Caveat: I am clueless.

My band are wanting to record some live demos on an old Fostex 8 track hard disk recorder fed from a Behringer 16 track mixing desk.

I'm okay with the bass, guitar, vocals and keys. The trouble comes with the drums...

The drums are mic'd up and occupy eight channels on the mixing desk. I want to take that down to two tracks on the Fostex, and I'm pretty sure you do that with the subgroups. How do you assign the Behringer tracks to a subgroup? Is it as simple as tracks 1 to 4 are subgroup 1, 5 to 8 are subgroup 2, etc.? Or is there more to it than that?

I don't know about that exact desk, but usually there's a series of push buttons for assigning a track to a pair of subgroups 1&2, 3&4 and/or to the main mix and/or to the mono out.

That's the way I do our live grouping: 1&2 for drums 3&4 for guitars or vocals, everything else straight to the main mix.

From looking at a picture the Behringer MX3242X is a four bus mixer, in other words you have four outputs. From what you are saying you want two track/stereo drums. So just assign the drum to two busses, think of them as left and right. Then patch those two output to input of the Foxtex. Looks like 1, 2, and 3,4 are stereo pairs. So should be able assign drum mic's to busses 1-2 and pan left or right as you like before senting to the Fostex.

I've never seen one of these best I can tell from looking at it on the net.

Next to the faders there's three buttons, '1-2', '3-4' and 'Main Mix'

I'm going to play about with these... it looks like all instruments apart from the drums should have all buttons off, and the drums should be switched to '1-2' and panned to the appropriate place.
