behringer ultrabass woes

Hi folks

I hope someone can give me some guidance on this

Ive been playing my new active bass for the past week [was originally playing a passive bass for a while before this] through my trusty BX1200 which i've had for two years now with no problems since i took it out of the box. Bass sounds lovely, amp sounds great - no problems until today.

My mate came round earlier and was playing it for a short while [admittedly a little bit loud - but not anything i was too bothered about] and then unplugged at the amp to stick a tuner onto it.

I was out of the room when he plugged back in and the amp suddenly howled non-stop until it was unplugged again, the cone almost jumps a cm back into the cab when this happens but does not appear to be blown. My mate has taken it to a friend to have a look at it... at the last call he said he thought he saw smoke around the back of the amp.

Anyone had this problem with an ultrabass before? They're suppposed to be bullet proof

Does this sound lke an easy fix or is it a dead amp?

Does plugging an active bass into the Passive socket mess the amp up?

Will my new stingray be affected by this? [the most scary one]

I have plugged my active into a socket which isn't -10dB it didn't mess the amp up one bit, it was just louder and sounded like it was ''pushing'' it a bit harder.

The stingray will be fine.

Also, the pad doesnt have to be used, it isnt that important, all you will do is clip the input a bit maybe. But stingrays dont seem to have that hot an output (well, mine arent in comparison to my EDA for example).

The problem could be one of many things in the amp. Oh, and i'd also say that the ultrabass amps are far from bulletproof, a friend of mine had one that spontaniously combusted, they arent exactly the best built amps around.

Id take it to a tech, or try and get it back to the shop under warranty if possible? Behringer apparently have an OK warranty system, but i dont know, ive never used it.

I also hope this friend of a friend is someone who actually knows what he/she is doing.

...for your input people, its good to get some context. I guess its new amp time, and it looks like i'm in the best place to get advice on that =D

No debate on that one, a head + cab will always be more flexible, and gives you more options for growth.
