Being in neutral while moveing

For most cars, starting the engine consumes a non-trivial amount of fuel, not to mention that's when most of an engine's wear occurs. Turning off your ignition is likely doing the opposite of what people think while shortening the overall life of the vehicle.
I wonder about this. I've driven a couple of BMW's lately which turn the engine off every time you stop in the name of economy, unless you deliberately disable the feature. It restarts immediately upon releasing the brake, probably with a high-powered flywheel motor.
 
I meant to say the coastee could do the read ending...not get rear ended.

You're coming to a stop light
There is a car in front of you
You decide to coast to the light in neutral
The car in front stops abruptly and very short
Not enough time to brake, you'd rear end them anyways, hitting the gas in the best option
Oops, I forgot I was in neutral...crunch

I'm still not sure how the dynamics of this situation work out to avoid an accident if you had a gear in.
 
Anecdotal, since I don't have further engineering or research data, but when I was gas-money-poor I used to shift my Toyota to Neutral at intersections and at the end of off ramps--the warranty-voiding behavior resulted in a broken timing belt, when I dropped it out of Drive at 40mph. Zeroed out my cost benefit ratio. YMMV.

How is this supposed to damage the timing belt?

Did it break when you got into neutral or back into gear?
 
I don't really understand the claims of cars "shutting off the fuel supply" and "infinity" fuel economy. An idling engine is burning fuel. Maybe a small amount, but there is fuel flowing.

Do some research. When coasting above 1k RPMS many new cars kill the injectors, your engine is still being turned by the wheels and the momentum of your car. Your therefor not using ANY fuel, I have done experiments obviously its more effecient this way than using neutral but my tests have shown the same.

If I put in the clutch / put the car in neutral, the wheels are no longer connected to the engine. How are they turning the engine when I am coasting?

First of all, idle is a highly optimized operation in a car (*). The fuel consumption is *very* low, as evident in the 99+ mpg I see when going down a hill in neutral.

As mentioned, the fuel supply when not in neutral, when pushing the engine, is shut off entirely. However, this doesn't work out in savings for me because my car needs to be pushed down the hill pretty hard to turn off fuel supply. In practice it only works when braking using the engine (suddenly lifting gas foot) or very steep hills.


(*) but not idle when warming up. Warming up is a fuel killer, and big time, even when idling. On/off systems that you see in many European cars (and in hybrids) work out to savings because the engine stays at operating temperature.
 
Hitting the brakes will rear end the person
Stepping on the gas and going into the open lane next to you will not rear end the person

This is getting stupid.

Rarely has accelerating ever saved me from an accident. Also if split second accerlation was so important, then we sue car manufactures, as I know MANY cars can not go from a gear it's declaring with to a gear low enough to accelerate fast with. I have the DSG, worlds fastest shifting transmission, still wouldn't be fast enough in this situation,

Not to mention if it were a manual and you had to clutch in change gears and clutch out would it be any more difficult to bump it into drive? Didn't think so
