Being in neutral while moveing

Well, I do believe that technology is being explored to make the internal combustion engine obsolete. Whether we like it or not.

I agree, but my point was that mandating this would save a heck of alot more fuel then a light on the dash that most people dont even understand.

The difference between a sensor and something drastic is people would notice the bigger things, such as a bunch of aero mods.

Aerodynamic cars save on fuel useage. That is a fact.

What you're missing is that aerodynamics don't start playing a factor until you're travelling at a high rate of speed (70 mph or so if memory serves me correctly) It's been a long time and I'm too lazy to google. After this, wind drag goes up exponentially.

This is used in racecars to go faster, they aren't really interested in fuel economy.

Low tire pressure should have a bigger effect on fuel consumption at all speeds, and do I dare say that I've yet to see a Saturn that can do 70?:hiding: :D

Aerodynamics play a role at all speeds, but they become a bigger part of overall resistance as speeds increase. For bicycles the general rule of thumb is ~30mph is the cutoff, but cars probably have more rolling resistance and friction losses in the drivetrain, so it could be higher.

Oh please show me written proof that "aerodynamics aren't a factor until 70MPH" so I can tell those silly bicyclists to stop drafting each other.

As far as technology were not using... Grills are getting smaller, or active grill blockers, wheels are being skirted, engines are stopping when vehicles stop, might not be everywhere yet but it will be.

Tell me these things don't work when you can get 65mpg out of a car in mixed driving rated for 38 HIGHWAY.

Tell the guys at Eco modder, what there doing is pointless when you can get 77mpg out of a while rated for 42 HIGHWAY.

Please just continue to tell me aerodynamics are a gimmic! And I'll let the flat earth society know of your theory!!
 
Smokey Yunick had an engine that ran extremely hot and was very efficient. Was also extremely temperamental.

diesel hybrid as they have in EU would provide excellent MPG. Chevy is also putting a diesel in a sedan that gets better mileage then a VW TDI.

areo is great if roads are very smooth, there are no animals to tear them off and everything is flat (no dips at gas stations et) and speed bumps become little mount Everests .

use 0W20 oil so your engine doesn't have to fight the oil pump as much.

ride a bike and save.

get some pizza cutter tires.

food for thought, every time you stop the engine with an older car, the entire start circuit wears a little when restarted. I just replaced the contacts in my starter solenoid and they were very worn

areo is helping big rigs get 10 MPG plus. Latest engines are also helping as they run cleaner so less filters to clog exhaust and kill efficiency.

Yup. I spoke to a driver recently who told me he was getting about 12 mpg when fully loaded, which I find astonishing. Some consumer grade trucks/SUV's barely manage that.
Really matters when it costs $1000 to fill up!

I never said aerodynamics are a gimmick. It's all about context. How fast are you driving on city streets?

If you think it'll benefit a daily driver Saturn, go for it. As for me, I'm gonna go change the bridge on my Jazz now. :D
 
If what the OP is talking about is useful and perfectly normal, then why is the warranty an issue?

I didn't say "normal".

Fact is that various car owner's manuals I read recently (I think BMW and Audi) both state very specifically that you void the warranty by going in and out of neutral while the car is moving, for the automatic transmission.

I think that federal regulations require that you can get into neutral at any time (which BTW also was the main reason why the runaway prius stories were obvious garbage), so they can't disable it. But the statement by the manufacturer is clear.

As I said earlier, that is why I don't go downhill in neutral anymore although I did measure that it saves fuel. I estimate it is perfectly safe if you are at idle rpm both when going in and going out but a new transmission would be kinda pricey. The only thing that counters that is that I should really have a manual transmission put into my car, this automatic stuff is nonsense anyway.
 
I got a speeding ticket driving my Saturn Ion home from a gig at 1am.
Had I been blue-lighted a minute earlier Id have been flagged for doing 105mph. My ticket was for 92mph.

you sure that's mph and not kph?:hiding:. Had that poor hamster running hard to get that fast. My Saturn sounded like an old washing machine that's out of balance if I had it much over 70.

I do wonder what the shift strategy is if the engine is at idle, trans is in neutral and road speed is 70 and the trans is shifted back into drive. Lots of variables there with computers and sensors. Would be easy with a manual- high gear and ease the clutch out so engine rpm can come up.....
