Just thought I'd post this since there isn't much on the forum about these. And sometimes talk bass is the best way to look up a certain instrument.
I bought a Spector Rebop about a month ago and was pleasantly surprised about how powerful and comfortable of a bass it was. (in retrospect, I really could have been perfectly happy with that bass, but I have a terrible condition where if I have money in my bank account it has to be dumped and I genuinely hate that aspect about myself
) but anyway I said "shoot, if the rebop sounds this good, Imma get a legit neck-through one" and I went ahead and foolishly sold the Rebop to help fund a euro.
On my search for a euro, I happened to get on facebook market place at the right time, and noticed a misspelled listing selling a "vintage Specter bass" and saw this beauty sitting in its anvil case. Just one photo on the listing, and a short description that I honestly don't remember what it said. After messaging them, I learned that it was actually the listers father selling the bass and she just posted it on Facebook for him. She gave me his number and I called him, he was out of state at the moment and we arranged a meet up for me to see the bass and decide if I'd like to purchase it before he left the state again. He was an older gentlemen entering his 70s and said he had bough this bass used over 35 to 40 years ago. And it was his main bass ever since, and that the only reason he was selling was because he had developed arthritis and for the past 5 years or so the bass had sat in its case.
So we meet up at his home in Dundalk, and as he was in the process of moving, his house was pretty much emptied out and he had no amp for me to hear the bass with, so really o just went off of how it felt, and I was instantly "starstruck" with this bass, this man clearly loved this bass, it wasn't free of its dings and scratches, but the bass was obviously well cared for despite being his main player. The finish, a captivating bright red transparent finish with subtle yet beautiful quilting on the body wings. The neck so much thinner and comfortable than the neck that was on the rebop. I was smitten and told the man I'd be back the next day to purchase it off him. He let me take it for even less than I offered him as he said he's glad to see someone who clearly wants the bass and will be playing it would be buying it (that isn't to say I didn't pay a sizable amount still
) so I bought the bass and took it home (my Gosh those anvil cases are HEAVY 
) and played it, it sounded great! Despite clearly having a few years old strings on it) strung it up with DRs and it, was singing with a voice so clear it stands to compete with new age hi Fi basses! The bass it self was singing, not my playing, I happen to be those "super nice bass, super mediocre player" type guys. But I enjoy playing music and appreciate a nice bass. I've already taken it to rehearsal with my band and it sounded great in the mix sometimes, the trebel on a Spector can sound overbearing when solo but it stands level in the mix way better than you'd expect! I bought a Ric earlier this year that was supposed to be the gem of my stable, but I don't know, this bass is just so comfortable and feels so special, I feel it's taken its spot as a grail. It's number #29 I'll leave some photos, but might add more, hopefully better, ones later on.
