Belated NGD: Custom Eyeglass Frames/Wood Porn

I though some of y'all might find these interesting, being that fancy wood and guitars are often overlapping hobbies/interests.

A friend of mine's cousin (I'm not paid to make this post, but we are friends, so full disclosure and all that) has a startup in Detroit called [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that makes these custom bespoke wood glasses frames. This past August I finally dropped the cash to have him make me a pair. It is as close to a custom guitar build process as I have gotten so far, but seemed like a good warmup for a custom bass build some day :)

I got to pick my frame style, wood choices, etc, and they're form-fitted to my face. I went with a burled walnut/flamed maple sammich on the front. Beams are ebony. Nose pads are tulipwood. I've had them for a few months now, and I get comments on them from random strangers at least a couple times a week. I love 'em.

Nice!! Were they "silly expensive" or good value for such a custom build? I like unique things like this.

My 15 year old daughter was given a ring by her boyfriend for Christmas which he hand made. It is wood with a guitar string wound around it and sealed with epoxy or something like that. Very unique and cool. I was a little concerned that he gave her a G-String for a present.... but his blank look and response of "I don't get it" makes me breathe easier.

That ring is pretty cool. The glasses were expensive, but you can spend more on designer frames than these, and these are custom. I guess the question you'd have to ask yourself is, do you want these or a new MIA Fender Standard P bass? Hard call.

Can you further quantify "expensive" ...or did you actually mean they cost the same as a new MIA Fender Standard P bass?

Pretty much. When you include lenses, which he gets at cost from a local guy (because he needs to be able to have them cut custom by the lab), depending on lens choice. The way I figured, I buy new frames once every 5 years or so, and just update lenses if my prescription changes, so if you spread it out over that timeframe, it isn't so bad, and I'm supporting a local business.

He does do non-prescription sunglasses as well, so those might run a bit cheaper. Not sure.
