Bends on piccolo strings?

The other option, which I will likely do when changing the strings the next time, is to get a guitar string set with your preferred gauge and just use the bottom 4 strings.

I'm not convinced this is a good idea. Even if the strings are long enough, the longer scale length of the bass means you'll be putting them under more tension than they where designed for, especially if you're using a long scale bass like I am

thanks, I must have missed you're post in the other thread. If the D in the piccolo set is usually used as a C on six strings that actually explains a lot and kind of answers a question for me. I was considering down tuning my piccolo to D standard to have a little extra give in the strings and it sounds like that might be a good idea. kind of a pain though. I'm still a new-ish player and tend to play most of my own stuff in E... not the end of the world, just a pain

Good point; I forgot your bass was long scale. Mine is guitar scale (25.5"), so I can get away with that.

The whole point of his suggestion was to go down in diameter, and tension, using readily (and multiple-gauge) available guitar strings. If you pinpoint the right gauges for your desired bendy playing style, said guitar strings will be well within their operating range of tension. By the way, don't expect piccolo bass strings to be apples and oranges from 6-string guitar ones: they may have slightly different core diameter specs, but hardly any special engineering in them to set them apart from their guitfiddle-fitting cousins.

i changed my ibanez 1005sms back to a piccolo setup the other day.
This time B1-G3, and taking guitar strings.
The tech from pyramid strings gave me tension numbers, that were all centered around 14,5 kg.


i´m not shure what the deal with those numbers that i got is ?
The numbers michael_t is posting here and in other threads are all way higher.
I guess something went the wrong way with my numbers.
fact is, ....first i thought they are way to flexy. Then i adapted a bit.

But with a tension of 14.5 kg +- does it definitly feel like a guitar. *Exactly* like a guitar !
Seems, that sort of tension number will work out perfectly for anybody who wants a "bendy" piccolo setup.
2 semitones bend, no problem. (i´m not trained to do bends. i never do)
