Bergantino AE212 - Just Released

Call Jim Bergantino if you feel you need more screws for your grill. He will probably send you some. My AE112 had some problems with the grill rattling and Jim sent me 2 more screws. The slight difference is that he said that mine had less screws in it already compared to what he was currently shipping.

Haven't pushed it on a gig yet, but it sounded GREAT at moderate volumes. Similar but fatter and smoother than the AE410. Of course, my little TecAmp s212 sounds great at moderate volumes also, so the jury is still out on performance. From what I hear in my 'basement' comparisons with the s212, it should do just fine when cranked!

I'll have it on two large room, loud band gigs in October, in rooms I've used the AE410 in often, so I'll post up after that. That will tell the tale. If it can keep up with slap transients like the AE410 at those volumes, it will be my new #1 cab.

I've been gigging my road rig for the last month (410UL/F500). Nice, but I need to get one of these Bergs to my remote location. As we've discussed, even though the 410UL is killer in its own way, I miss the punch and grind!

PS I have an HT112ER on loan for a week to check out. Impressive little box. I have a clip up on my Youtube channel. Amazing the amoung of clean, deep low end that comes out of that little (if heavy) box.

Great review. Really makes me want to pick one of these up.

FWIW, the cabinet finish works pretty well if you always use a cover when moving the cab. I've had my AE410 for over two years of gigging almost every single weekend and it still looks nearly brand new. Hardly a scratch on it. But I always move it with the cover on.

Every coating has its issues: rat fur gets ratty and collects dirt and such and soaks up beer; tolex gets tears and peels up and looks bad after a while, and the Berg coating WILL get scratched up.

Of them all, I still like the Berg coating the best. Combine with using a padded cover when moving the cab and it holds up pretty well.

Just re-read this and I need to be a little more fair on the finish. First, this is a way better finish than tolex; I keep mixing up ozonite (or carpet/ratfur) with tolex. I still think that the black carpet is a little more durable, but trying to keep it clean blows dead bears.

Overall, I like this finish better than pretty much anything else, but like rat fur and tolex, it too has it's drawbacks. Having said that, I doubt any finish would have stood up to being belted with a mic stand on the first gig by an a$$munch stage tech. :scowl:

Yes and cats just love it for sharpening their nails.:D

I've always thought that the carpet covering that Jim uses on his cabinets is much nicer than most all of the other cabinet builders. And it is a lot more forgiving of bumps, scratches and dings. And now that most venues have eliminated smoking they don't reek like they use to. But beer spilling on it, it serves as a nice sponge.:hmm:

I was just looking at Bart's ae410 the other night at one of his gigs and was thinking that the cabinets looks brand new. The cover is the key but Jim is getting $90 plus shipping for the cover for the ae212.

The covers are a bit steep, but if you ever priced one yourself from Tuki or LeCover, that's about what they are. I guess the relatively small volumes of each size result in relatively high cost. As you say, worth every penny, especially with the AE's.

Yeah, there's no perfect defense against careless dolts. :hmm:

I agree that the carpet on the other Berg cabs is fantastic. I have an IP310 that looks nearly brand new as well, but a lot of that is because I gig the AE410 almost exclusively and have no cats. The carpet on the IP did soak up the smoke smell before they banned smoking in bars but that's not an issue any more. While I've avoided any major scratches on either cab, I have had beer spilled on both and the AE is a lot easier to deal with.

I still like the coating on the AE series best though it is vulnerable to scrapes and dings. But I have managed to keep mine pretty clean despite many hours of service in sleazy bars thanks to the cover, which isn't cheap, but well worth it, IMO.

TFB550A no eq changes. BN5 with low,mid and treble at about 60%. Sounded sweet. My band isn't particularly loud but the sound and balance was awesome to my ear.

Here is a song from yesterday, just recorded on a digital camera i think. You can hear me tussling with the drummer over the tempo at the beginning but it smooths out.

Yes, I play my CR5MW Ken Smith most of the time. I really only have a USA Peavey Cirrus as a second bass...which is no slouch either....IMO

Yeah, I'm with ya on the AE212 .....I just seem to really dig the AE voicing, and want to check out the AE212 as well.. I like the wallop my HT112ERs have for their size, but the AE tone is my thing overall.......once they are goosed a bit and start to blossom, they really sound sweet to my ears.....

So Ken, you think that you can get both the 212 and 410 to sound pretty close to each other? I love the sound of my 2x112 stack, but thinking I should go with the ae410 for some more headroom and sound. I'd do it if I think I can get it to sound like the ae112 stack but with more power.

I did an A/B of a 2xAE112 stack vs AE212 the other day. The AE212 has way more low end extension than two of the AE112s has. But, the AE112 probably has a little more up top. It is hard to say if the AE212 is truly "louder" than a AE112 stack just because they are voiced differently. It "sounds" louder but that could just be the voicing of the cabs. To my ears, the overall tone of the AE112 stack is closer to what the AE410 sounds like. Maybe you can EQ the AE212 to sound more like the AE410 but it would be hard to take out that low end extension that does not exist in the AE410 or AE112 stack.

Oh, and BTW..The Atlanta Bass Gallery has another AE212 in stock now. If it has not been sold already. I do know that somebody on this list was talking about going to pick it up this week. And, it was not me! :)
