Bernie Worrell R.I.P.

Hmm...

Wonder if Bernie was fighting this for awhile...

I remember hanging backstage with Pete Brown and Malcolm Bruce at a Cuicoland Express gig. Bernie and Vernon Reid were in Jack Bruce's band for that gig at Shepherds Bush. I didn't recognize Bernie at first. He looked completely different than what I remembered, and I remember thinking "Hmm... Something's up." I also remember NOT going over and bothering them, although they were roughly 6 ft away. They didn't look too happy...
He had a left hand that reminded me of Brother Jack McDuff and others... It was a scary revelation learning back in the day that the funkiest bass lines I was hearing weren't being performed/thought up by a bassist. It kind of led me to evaluating Anthony Jackson's interviews about his practice regimens with a grain of understanding. How could you not want that tone or that groove?

2016 has been a hell of a year for the music community... Although if there are any jam sessions in heaven, at least I know they are slamming', and they just gained another member of the Mothership Connection...

I think I'm going to put on Flashlight and reminisce... :(
