Best 5 strings under $ 1000

Depends on your preferences for feel and sound. Have you played anything yet?

Even though I have plenty of Fenders, I don't like Fender 5 string necks, yet many other people do. I bought and returned a Schecter, tried many of the recommendations here, and ended up with an active Ibanez SR with Bartolini pickups. I love the thin, skinny neck, and the body is light and comfortable. The bass sounds very nice and complements my Fender 4 bangers nicely for the classic rock I typically play.

But that's just me and what works for you and your music might be very different. It's right up there with asking for shoe recommendations.

My only sub $1000 5 string bass was one I bought in 1982 from Carvin. Back then it was about the only decent sub $1000 5 stringer around - 5 string basses were typically $3000 things back then.

Odd thing is nowadays it's not possible to get a 5 stringer from Carvin for $1000, but it's much easier to find a decent one from someone else for under a kilobuck.

Lakland 55-02 or 55-01 (used)

both basses have same fit and feel, different pickup selection.

Sometimes you can find the 55-01's for ~$600, which means if you're handy with a soldering iron and set up, you can put in a brand new set of Bart's, Aguilar's, Audere, nord's or almost any other pickup/electronic set under the sun.

this dude makes them sound pretty good

so does mono neon

Hmm, they even sound great upside-down! Good to know...

I scored this beauty, under $1K, that was online for a while, crazily, so I negotiated with the seller and pulled the trigger. I've played/owned tons of great basses, have been to NAMM before, and my Carvin Icon can perform with the best of them, imo...buttery action, tonal flexibility, perfect balance, and BIG low end.
