Sire p7 in my opinion, my other 5er is an American fender, the sire gets all the playing time!
What about it, specifically, do you prefer? Better B-string? Preamp? Neck? All of the above?

Don't trust all these standard cliché recs. You are going to get Ibanez, Fender, Sire, etc....but LTD AP-5 all the way. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Just do it and thank me later. There is no other production 5-string that can match the quality and sound of this beast.

I reckon Sire's the way to go. They've got some nice fretless options.
The Sterling by musicman Ray 35 is a good one. The cosmetics aren’t for everyone but the esp f-415fm is a very good Spector like bass for less than a grand.
All the above and a quarter of the price of a new fender elite! I purchased this one used.What about it, specifically, do you prefer? Better B-string? Preamp? Neck? All of the above?

Lakland 55-01. Great neck! Some replace the preamp, but it’s still good.

I’m not a real 5 string player, I just play one on TV. But if I was...... Ibanez SR. The SR505 or one of its seemingly 1000 variants in different finishes is the best bang/buck I’ve seen.

No such thing as a 'best'bass, but here are some good ones from my hands-on/owning experience:
Used Pre-Kiesel Carvin, like an SB5000, B25 or similar (34" scale). Carvin make a good fretless as well
Used Lakland Skyline series (35" scale). Any model
Used Reverend Mercalli 5 (34")
I have not owned or played one, but I here good things about Sire.

I recommend the Ibanez TMB605. It was a great bass and I miss it:

As much as I like higher basses, either of these compares very favorably with much more expensive basses.

The Sires are really nice, but that headstock is so damn ugly I refuse to play one. 
Easy. LTD B205. What ever you get make sure it has active EQ. If not the 5th will be muddy and dull.
