I noticed your location. Was it by any chance Jim Mouradian? I heard he was a godly bass repairman. I remember reading a quote on google that went like

"On the seventh day, God created stringed instruments, and on the eighth day, God created Jim Mouradian to fix them"

No, Jim (Cambridge music) hasn't done any work for me, but I've heard he's very, very good.

I lower the action on my Geddy Jazz to fit my style and it buzzes like crazy...however you can't hear the buzz while plugged in and playing. Only noticeable while playing unplugged.

As long as the buzz isn't transferring through to your rig I wouldn't worry about it.

Ive never owned one but every Lakland I've touched has excellent action and just feels great to play.

US and Japan Fenders are great as well.

Mainly I'd say Lakland has the best action.

cheers for all the advice folks, tbh i think i'll just get it set up properly because the actions playable if not perfect and from what you've all said i think that could get rid of the buzz aswell....

Dude you should try a peavey cirrus, thats the lowest action u can get from a bass without that horrible fretbuuuuzzz.

A lot of manufacturers rely on the accuracy of their machines to ensure level frets - sometimes this is sufficient, but often it's not - ie it's a matter of luck if you get one that will go down low. BUT to reiterate what the other guy said ANY bass with a non-warped neck can, if the frets are levelled, be adjusted to as low as anyone would want it. It's no good getting a setup if the frets aren't level in the first place - try the rocker test, you might be shocked, even on some high end basses. It really is worth paying for a fret level and crowning job, because it will make ANY bass go as low as the most expensive you can get.
If I were buying new again, I'd go for a maker who uses a Plek machine, because you're not relying on luck - it's going to be perfect.
I've got a $250 bass that I levelled myself, and it goes so low I can't believe it - level frets are the secret!
