80s/90s Spector ! it took a fodera yinyan series 1 to replace mine!

Sire...because the preamp is really what you are buying (It is phenomenal !)....it just happens to come attached to a free bass with an OK build

My first thought was Sire - solid build quality and their preamp is awesome. If you don't want a standard looking P/J bass, they also have the M series.

There are a lot of great suggestions for used basses in this thread, most of them will come down to whether or not you like the tone. Used Warwick, EBMM, Ibanez, they are all great but tonally quite different.

I see the dudes from The Omnific crushing on those Bongo basses (I think they even switched to this from Warwick Thumb basses) and it almost makes me want one. The problem is someone around here said they look like a toilet bowl once, and now I can never not see that.
